Crash, my dad is convinced by the Marlowe thing. It seems more or less plausible to me. What are the counter-arguments?

You don't appreciate the depth of the conspiracy theory here. All the people in the pub where he died were also government agents. Marlowe may have found it useful to be considered dead. And Shakespeare the actor may have agreed to front for him as author. According to one theory, Marlowe spent most of the rest of his life in Italy, where so many Shakespeare plays are set...
