Gene, thanks for explaining sub/superscripts. Here's an example in case it helps anyone. If you want this to appear in your text:
(C6H10O5)n
Then what you would actually type is (but put it all on one line, otherwise you'll get the linefeed in the middle of your formula):
(C6H10
O5 )n
