Hominids walked upright before the Savannah ecological change occurred, thus bipedalism was
not developed
for that ecology (predates it), rather it's prior occurrence
enabled hominids to take advantage of the changing ecos.
I find the statement:

I also find that when humans scramble over rock piles they tend to revert to using four limbs ...
