There is a particular model that often seems to produce this misunderstanding. In a different discussion about the expansion of the universe subsequent to the big bang, a simile is often given with points on an expanding balloon. Taken literally, this is often seen as suggesting that our universe is the rubber of the balloon, and that hence the universe is hollow. But that is a weakness of the simile, rather than what it is actually trying to communicate.
