I agree that Gary's posting is very good. But I will add that (like the topic I commented on in message 8, above) this message is but one of many solid postings. I think that NosyNed's message 115 is also very good.
I chipped in my bit, and Edge has said much. So many people have contributed so much. In all, perhaps the best geologic topic I have encountered at .
Special thanks to Faith, for single-handedly holding down the creationist side of the discussion. Being the one against the many is no easy thing to be.

ps: Is anyone going to give holmes a POTM for that monster message 1 of the "Coffee House" topic he started a while back. Indications are that it's pretty heavy - But I'm staying clear of trying to read the whole thing carefully, for fear that my head might explode.
