The "Posts of the Month" forum index page.
These topics listed at the above page are still available for additions.----- Now for December 2003 (as per previous months):
quote: A link to the message, and perhap a SHORT comment would also be nice. But, this is NOT a place to debate the referenced topic - so be nice. I think that a fairly liberal use of this topic would be a good thing for indexing some nice messages that are otherwise doomed to be lost in the clutter. So, if you encounter a message that seems to say something of special substance, please give it a plug/reference in this topic. New month, same old message and routine,Adminnemooseus |

Darn!!! Too late.
I second minnemooseus's nomination of Nosy's post because of the analogy - although I'm not so sure about the use of "comic book" in the analogy. LOL I can see it now, Nosy thinks the ToE is about as factual as a comic book...

Forum: Evolution Thread: What convinced you of evolution Post #: 21 Somehow we have received a mini-auto-biography. This has some poetry in it and I have to thank Quetzel for sharing it. It is a much more accurate expression of my reasons for being convinced than my own post. It is too bad our short term visitor who asked the question will not "get it" at all. A clear case of "pearls before ...".

Thanks Nosy, Mr.H. My intent was to show the questioner that there were more ways to arrive at the evo conclusion than brainwashing, ignorance or philosophical desperation (in the sense of blindly searching for something to replace God). I got there through my own observations. Biology simply put a name to it and added details to my understanding. If I had seen anything that contradicted (substantively, I mean) the theory, then I wouldn't have accepted it. It's a process of observation that ANYONE can do - even an 8-year-old. One of the greatest rewards of my life so far is seeing the same process unfolding in my oldest daughter - who has accompanied me on many of my field jaunts. To see almost the exact same sense of awakening interest and dawning understanding in her - bit by bit, observation by observation, explanation by explanation - takes me back to my own childhood in many ways (in spite of being somewhat of a loner, it was a very happy time). The other day, she said - completely unsolicited - "Of course I want to study biology - it's what my daddy did..." (*sounds of "awwww, ain't that sweet" from the peanut gallery*)

May I suggest that in the new year we go over the 2003 posts of the month and pick one as post of the year? I think the rule should be that a post has to have been a post of the month before it can be considered?

I want to go on record opposing the nomination of this otherwise excellent post as it thoroughly disappointed me with my life since I did not grow up with a backyard which included 10ha of forest and streams and a nature museum.

Q, dissuade your daughter from a life of being on the brink of unemployment, pseudo-indentured servitude to professors, living from grant to grant, and having to be near retirement age before earning a liveable income (if your lucky)...Mammuthus tramps off to deal with his latest announced grant budget cut and proposed 10% reduction of his salary

I will refrain from commenting on either but will let them stand on their own.

Forum: Evolution Thread: A Creationists Definition of Evolution. Post #: 9 "Evolution is a quantifiable change in the prevalence of inheritable traits or characteristics in a specific population of organisms over one or more generations." The best definition of evolution I've seen, on top of an "I wished I'd said that" (or more accurately, I wished I could say that) post. Mark

Forum: Evolution Thread: What Convinced You of Evolution? Post #: 46 I don't know how I missed this first time around. Daniel has done an excellent job in a very short post describing the "emotionally fulfilling" (that was weak - I just hate using the word "spiritual") side of nature. This is what fundamentalists keep claiming is impossible for a non-believer. Daniel has done a better job than I ever could articulating my own feelings when I contemplate the complexity and majesty of life and the universe. Well done.
