An interesting thread.
Here are two examples: I had to check my source to get the details right.
1. Jack Kevorkian's lawyer once challenged Cardinal Maida to either put up or shut up. Maida decided that was good advice and decided to do whatever it takes to change peoples minds about suicide and abortion. What Maida did is he offered to pay the bills for all who were considering committing suicide or having an abortion. He then got thirty local agencies involved and and set up Project Life. He sent out messages that anyone who was considering suicide or abortion could take comfort and help from people who did care for them. Since 1996 more than 1000 people have called and received help from Project Life. This good Cardinal put his money where his mouth was and has in turn brought comfort to many people.
2. At a press conference a long time ago a reporter asked Jerry Falwell what practical alternatives there were to abortions. Falwell said to have the baby. When asked, "Do you really think it is that simple? What are you doing for women who want to keep their babies but cant? Is it enough to stand against abortions when you are not doing anything for them to provide a hopeful alternative?" Falwell was speechless. But he responded too. In 1982 he set up Liberty Godparent Ministries which includes a crisis pregnancy center. The national hotline gets 2000 calls a month. LGM provides many services for pregnant girls and it has helped many people. More than 600 programs since then have been based on LGM due to its sucsess.
I seek to make no accusations or opinions on the abortion or suicide issue. What I will say, and what anyone should say is that there is always people who will help.
Most Sincerely,
Apostle
