Gogarten is refering "to the roots" that Paul mentioned and the difficulty with thus constructing a "single tree of life" does not affect the issue of what kind of thing that hair clamp looking creature is or was.
I might speculate that there is some connection via the shapes of cell death from bacteria through volvox etc but Paul is right as far as he goes here.
