I rather suspect that respect for the voice of the people was not at the absolute apex of Putin's thought process when he decided to annex the Crimea.
Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Well russia and Ukraine had the same problem with Crimea as Slovenija and Croatia have with Istra. While we have been involved in legal battles for 20 years, and now an EU arbiter court to determine the fate of istra. He took the simpler route and just took it back, knowing that crimeans would be happy about it.
and yes he thought about how crime-ans would react, because there woul be no other way to hold Crimea without going to war if the people did not agree. The majority of Crimeans, no doubt. I don't believe that was why he did it however. I believe the referendum made the decision to annex easier to justify, rather than motivated it. For that reason, I think that the annexure remains a very dangerous international precedent.
Frustrating and lengthy as your process has no doubt been in relation to Istra, it remains infinitely preferable to finding reasons to invade somewhere. They're capable of being found with depressing ease.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Yea ofcourse it was motivated by a cue that that shifted Ukrajine from prefering Russia to preferring nato, that endangered Russia's military base in Crimea and its overall presence in that region forcing them to take action or leave its underbelly exposed to attack from nato agressors.

Somebody did something similar in 1938 in a little place called Sudetenland.

the Ukrainian "revolution" took place 18–23 February 2014 ending with President Yanukovych fleeing the country.
Pro Russian protest in Crimea started on February 23, so called Russian soldiers whiteout insignia's took over the government on February 27.The independent republic of Crimea then had a referendum on the 16th of march. Where an overwhelming majority of the population voted for the independent republic of Crimea to join Russia. On march 18 they signed a treaty to join Russia. Yea but there is no proof that those where russian soldiers. And there would be no way that the pro eu/nato radicals that overthrew the Ukrainian government would allow a referendum in Crimea.

Yea we are part of nato, why i have no idea its not like anyone can find us on a map.
p.s. The Slovenian president orders an atack on america, after the attack he orders the people to bunker down and wait for an attack. " days later still no retaliation, so he orders a second wave, tells the populace to bunker down and wait for retaliation, a few days later still no retaliation, he orderes a third wave same scenario. So he picks up the phone and asks the american president, why dont you retaliate against us, the american president replys, how is it possible that anyone in Slovakia is still alive. Yea but there is no proof that those where russian soldiers.

Putin himself admitting that there were russian troops in the crimea. Yea like there are russian soldiers in germany, in south korea, vietnam ... he has a military base there of course he had soldiers there. But there is no proof that it was russian soldiers that took over the Crimean government. Because many Crimean soldiers defected it could have been their own soldiers. The simple storry is America started a "revolution" in Ukraine to cut off Russia way in to the Mediterranean, and putin wouldn't have it. Why did the revolution start because the president of Ukraine got a better financing deal from russia then the EU gave them and he took it. And given that the people voted the point who did what should be moot. Or would you like to force them back to Ukraine against the will of the people? Who wore russian uniforms, and carried russian weapons.
Or would you like to force them back to Ukraine against the will of the people?
And how do we know it was the will of the people? Any vote after an invasion by another country is going to be suspect. It's not enough to bash in heads, you've got to bash in minds soon I discovered that this rock thing was true Jerry Lee Lewis was the devil Jesus was an architect previous to his career as a prophet All of a sudden i found myself in love with the world And so there was only one thing I could do Was ding a ding dang my dang along ling long - Jesus Built my Hotrod Ministry Live every week like it's Shark Week! - Tracey Jordan Just a monkey in a long line of kings. - Matthew Good If "elitist" just means "not the dumbest motherfucker in the room", I'll be an elitist! - Get Your War On *not an actual doctor
