what is to sell about organic foods? eating what God intended That was a question that one of our members posed in Chat, and I think would make an interesting discussion. What foods are available that are "what God intended?" Even in the third world, what food stuffs are still available that have not been molded, created, through human design and manipulation? One of the funny videos out there is the classic "Banana" example, where a banana is held up as an example of something God designed. What is so funny is the banana that is used as an example is a classic example of human intervention and design. It is the result of humans modifying something to meet the very human needs of shipping and marketing. So what is still out there that is "what God intended?" Aslan is not a Tame Lion

At least in the PNW of the United States Poulsbo Bread is a common favorite. And it is, according to the label, "Inspired by God's word (Ezekiel 4:9)"
Ezekiel writes: Take thou also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentiles, and millet, and fitches, and put them in one vessel, and make thee bread thereof, according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon thy side, three hundred and ninety days shalt thou eat thereof But in Ezekiel 4:12:
Ezekiel writes: And thou shalt eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man, in their sight. In this story God relents and allows them to cook it with cow pooh instead. But still, good old fashioned OT recipe! What about wild berries? Blueberries, Gooseberries, Bilberries, Strawberries, and Raspberries? Almost all the result of human breeding. And the few truly native ones are often small and bitter. Edited by jar, : No reason given. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Planting seeds from apple trees that had been grown and cultivated by man for millennia?

Okay....apparantly much of our fruit has been cultivated.
Is the same true with vegetables? Corn? Lettuce? Beans? And what about Eggs from Hens?

Maize - Wikipedia look at the origins section
this is the most likely ancestor of our modern corn (as compared to "primitive maize" which is still just a tad smaller than our modern corn). it's a wild grass. corn doesn't really exist in the wild. most of the food that we eat has been changed through selective growing processes to be bigger, sweeter, more nutritious. as for eggs, the chickens we have now are not what they were once upon a time. also, have you noticed the size differences in eggs in the store? i'm sure jumbo eggs are completely natural *shakes head*. Beans? Beans have been cultivated for at least 7500 years. http://www.museums.org.za/...fabaceae/phaseolus_vulgaris.htm
Lettuce? Lettuce's ancestor was a prickly weed. http://calettuceresearchboard.org/Origin.html

I remember reading about the cultivation of maize in the book 1491 by Charles C. Mann. Quite interesting.
Even more interesting and also pertinent to the topic is the research Mann cites that proposes that much of what we consider wild rainforest now used to be "orchards" that were cultivated over the millenia by native Amazonians. That they didn't just live passively among a natural abundance, but that they actively shaped their environment and their food sources through careful selection and breeding. So even "wild" foods may not be as wild as we think. To jar - would selective breeding automatically disqualify something as "God-intended?" Especially if He commanded us to "subdue the earth." Wouldn't that possibly entail manipulating foodstuffs to our benefit? Why or why not? "You are metaphysicians. You can prove anything by metaphysics; and having done so, every metaphysician can prove every other metaphysician wrong--to his own satisfaction. You are anarchists in the realm of thought. And you are mad cosmos-makers. Each of you dwells in a cosmos of his own making, created out of his own fancies and desires. You do not know the real world in which you live, and your thinking has no place in the real world except in so far as it is phenomena of mental aberration." -The Iron Heel by Jack London "Hazards exist that are not marked" - some bar in Chelsea

Especially if He commanded us to "subdue the earth." depends which story you follow.
Gen 1:28-29 God blessed them; and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth." Then God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; Gen 2:16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, "From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; eat freely of the trees is a lot different than subduing the grains of the fields.

Is the same true with vegetables? Corn? Lettuce? Beans? And what about Eggs from Hens? Absolutely true. And yes, both the chicken and the egg are the result of human engineering. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

To jar - would selective breeding automatically disqualify something as "God-intended?" Especially if He commanded us to "subdue the earth." Wouldn't that possibly entail manipulating foodstuffs to our benefit? Why or why not? But God is not "manipulating foodstuffs to our benefit", rather we are changing things to what we intended, to our tastes and more recently, to the demands of world-wide commercial shipping. If god intended for bananas to be long, firm and virtually seedless, God had the chance to make it that way. But God did not; man made the banana what it is today. Aslan is not a Tame Lion
