crashfrog writes: What other groups, though? Just other religions? I am not sure where the infomation was gathered, but I did recall reading an article in National Geographic about Seventh Day Adventists. November 2005 **I am at work right now so unable to dig up the copy. I will look when I get home to see if it mentions where they got the information. My father is Adventist and we have had conversations about this very topic. I remember him mentioning surveys and such that where done, but I will have to try and remember to ask him for more details. I don't think that this data is particularily religious in nature - from my upbringing I have seen that Seventh Day Adventists do believe in living a healthy lifestyle and eating a very healthy diet. Though based on religious ideals it just simply makes sense that healthy living would result in longer living (on average)

Razd, your whole message is quite irrevelant to my message which was a sound refutation of Schraf's false notion that man has evolved as carnivorous and that vegetarians usually needed to take synthetic vits to get adequate B's to make up for not eating meat.
Often they do take them as I do and I'm no vegetarian. We take them to make up for the deficiencies in out foods which are themselves defficient in vits and minerals due to the way they're grown commercially, processed, preserved, et al whether we're vegetarians or not. Btw, My point about synthetics is that they lack the nutritional value that the natural ones have. They are cheaper but you get what you pay for with them. Not only that but some of the naturals have a lot of fillers in them which means you get less for your money than the better quality ones. There's a lot of science to the alternative health field, much of which has greatly advanced phenominally in just the last two decades. Many of the better MDs are finally moving into applying some of it to their practices. BUZSAW B 4 U 2 C Y BUZ SAW. Razd, your whole message is quite irrevelant to my message ... Perhaps you would like to start a thread on health, vitamins and holistic approaches. I appreciate your concern, but this is getting off topic on the matter of cancer survival. Thanks. My health improves every day, my strength increases and my endurance. It starts with little things, like being able to walk around the block (a small residential block with ~10 houses on it), to being able to stay up past 8pm. Of course there are still frequent naps per day, but these too are decreasing. My latest checkup (yesterday) showed much improvement in platelets (those cells that heal wounds) and white cells (the ones that fight infections). I can now walk around the block without having to wear a surgical mask, though one is still recommended when around strange people (who may be infected with some low grade disease that could still overwhelm my young system). It is like starting again as a child with my immunity system, it needs to grow and be able to deal with the everyday diseases. Unfortunately I don't get the boost from breastmilk that kids get (as much as I would like to try ... ) ... but at the end of 6 months I will be getting some of the prophylactic immunizations again to boost my system. They will only give me the ones NOT made from living viruses, as those will still pose a danger at that time. The living ones (including measles) may be done after a year from the cell transplant, and it may take 1 t 3 years for the immune system to reach normal levels. This means travel to foreign locations may need to be curtailed accordingly, certainly to areas of questinable health practices. Still there are many places to see in this world and many things to do: boredom is not an issue. Oh, and I can start cycling again (around the block ...). Fitness after all is a big part of overall health eh? Enjoy. This is all great news, my friend. You're right about topic concerns. I have so much going elsewhere that I'll likely not do a new topic on wholistic at this time but would like to sometime.
Hopefully this discussion will have provided some insight which may serve to help as you build up your imune system and progress along. Your willingness and ability to exercise certainly is one very positive factor in your progress. Your attitude and positive mindset about it is an inspiration to us all!

My health improves every day, my strength increases and my endurance. Glad to hear it! Your spirit doesn't seem dampened by the experience, so it seems like you're fighting the good fight. You make sure your insurance company doesn't try to roll over on you in the process. I was just struck now with a sense of guilt because I have been so preoccupied in my own affairs that I have not prayed for your recovery in some time. I know that does not mean much to you, but please take it as a gesture of good will. Keep us posted. We're rootin' for you, bud. Tour de France started today, prologue won by a swiss rider. Should be interesting to see who emerges from the crowd come the mountains.
I also rode by bike for the first ride since the hospital today. Less than a mile, and only moderate little hills. Pooped. Hopefully I can build up better on the bike than walking (uses more of my body). I might run out of neighborhood soon (I'll have to cross a major road to expand riding area, but it is also flat over there). And I'll need a water bottle. I am feeling pretty much my old self again. Gone back to the old avatar as a result. Up to 15 miles cycling, but tired afterwards. Start work again in a week, so posting time will be down (its been slow anyway).
Looking forward. Enjoy.

This is great news, RAZD! You are an inspiration to me and make me feel that my gripes really have no place or substance in my life! I'm gonna start riding my bike again also! I'll keep you posted.

Thanks Phat. Small words with big effects. Just thought I would post another update with before and after:
It's been 6 months since the transplanted white cells and things are getting back to normal. I still have some fatigue issues (but everyone my age tells me its also an effect of my age ), but I'm back to work and looking forward to spring. When the cycling starts over. (yes Ned, that's hair, sorry) Enjoy. Looking good RAZD! The difference between those pictures and the ones at the beginning of the thread is an inspiration. The human capacity to fight on and bounce back never ceases to amaze. Kudos. As soon as my new PC set-up is in place, the World Grid program goes on my computer.

ICANT Dogs thread message 31
I was stating an observation. You are a much different person than you were back in March. If you disagree go back and read your post then and compare them to now. March 2007 I was just finishing my second program of chemo, after finding out the first one didn't work. At that time I already knew I would need the stem cell transplant. That was probably my low point mentally. One "change" I have made was conscious -- to post less, and to pick the points to reply to for most "need" -- and this is due to having less energy. I simply can't afford to get run-down tired when I have a jeopardized immune system. As a consequence I don't engage in "banter" as much, and it takes me a couple of days to put together some posts that take a few hours of work to research and document. Like the ones on the "Dogs will be Dogs" thread. If that makes me less "fun" for now, that is a price I'm happy to pay. We'll have to wait and see what happens. Enjoy. we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmericanOZen[Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share.

Hi RAZD,
We'll have to wait and see what happens. I truly wish you all the best. I do pray for you even though you do not believe in my God. My reference to invincibility is that when I was young and strong I did not think anything could stop me. One day I got old and I can't do what I used too. I have artificial knees and it makes a big difference in what I can do now to what I could do before. I go to a class reunion and there is only a few of us there. Then I look around and realize I am running out of time and there is so much I want to get done before I leave this place. The mind is still willing but the body refuses to hurry so I get frustrated at myself. If I am not careful it spills over and makes me come over as overbearing or a grouch. So I just try to have fun, Now you take care of yourself. "John 5:39 (KJS) Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."

RAZD,
I just saw references to this thread yesterday. I have to say THANKS, your courage, optimism and determination are an inspiration. I am really glad to hear that you are feeling better. I have been ill for the last month and a half and have spent a lot of time here reading threads, but not posting anything of substance. Over and over I have been tempted to join in but you and many others have already answered more clearly and eloquently than I could. I have studied evolutionary biology most of my life, but I have learned so much more in the past month from you and others here on the evolution side of the debate. It has really helped me clarify my understanding of the evidence of the evolutionary history of life on the earth and also my personal intrest group, the dragonflies. The reason I am posting here now, is that I was diagnosed with bladder cancer this week. It is early in the process for me, since my treatment (Chemo) will not start until my bladder heals from the biopsy, but the prognosis is very good that I will fully recover. Any way I just wanted to thank you and the others for the enlightment and entertainment. I don't know how you guys remain so patient with the posters who refuse to get the point. I do also enjoy reading aloud some of the incomprehensible postings from the Creo/IDists. It always makes me laugh and laughter is always good medicine. I know there are many good hearted people on this forum, but I don't need or want any prayers on my behalf. I do not believe there is a god that cares or intecedes in our lives..... or that would be bothered with someone who does not acknowledge it/him/her, just because someone else asks. If I am wrong about god and sometime we meet, it/he/she has a lot to answer for. What if Eleanor Roosevelt had wings? -- Monty Python You can't build a Time Machine without Weird Optics -- S. Valley
