The value of cooperation is not JUST kin selection - there really can be a genuine survival benefit for the individual. Indeed, the application of game theory (the so-called "Prisoner's Dilemma" being a well known example) indicates that in a small group (a small tribe or a village) it is better in the long term to deal fairly even if it sacrifices immediate gain.
