Ok, a bit of a touchy question, as a black kid, a smart, black kid, do I risk being a token? I really, really hate being introduce to visiting pols.
Well, you may already be a token, just by being admitted. What you have to decide is whether you are a token because you are black, or a token because you are intelligent.
There will always be some people with hidden bigotry, and some that are blatant. My second year at Duke (in 1967) I took an engineering course from a professor that flunked four students in his class: all three girls and the one long haired yankee. You may also find more bias from rich kids against poor kids than based on color.
But you need to define who you are.
