The more I read the news, the more angry I become at what the world politics have become. On the one hand, we have liberal commies who are deathly afraid of offending people, so they let anything goes. What's that? You tortured and murdered a 5 year old boy? That's ok, we'll put you in jail for 6 years and give you a new identity and a monthly tax payers' pension. What's that? You imgregnated a 9 year old girl? That's ok, since you belong to a certain tribe, you are free to do whatever the hell you want to very young girls.

Then on the other side, we have the ultra conservative nutjobs who only want to do everything they can to bring about the apocalypse so that they can meet their creator a little sooner. What's that? You shot an Asian international student who was on your lawn because he went to the wrong house for a party? That's ok, we'll simply give you more ammo to shoot more innocent people who just happens to step on your land.

Why the hell do people lean either very far to the left or very far to the right at the cost of common sense? Is there some kind of mental block at work here that I'm not aware of?

This just in. A 10 year old girl just gave birth in Columbia. But the police can't do a damn thing to the father because... wait for it... it's some kind of tradition in that tribe and we have to respect and be polite to their backwatered ways of life. I don't care how politically incorrect this sound, I don't care if it's your tribal tradition or whatever. If it doesn't make sense, then screw your traditions.

Thread copied here from the radical liberals (aka liberal commies) vs ultra conservatives (aka nutjobs) thread in the Proposed New Topics forum.

Just a reminder, Taz...keep to the Forum Guidelines and go for it here. Dont harass or goad any fellow members. I notice three of them already negated your rating even before this left the proposed new topics! Seems you all like to argue, however, so maybe putting this here will vent some steam.

Sense and Sensibility
I don't care if it's your tribal tradition or whatever. If it doesn't make sense, then screw your traditions.

Good god damn right! If it doesn't make sense to sensible people in the US, then you can't god damn do it. In Columbia or any other backwards country where they probably rub two rocks together for fire. Idiots.

This just in, a 9 year old was forced to get pregnant in Arabia somewhere. Why?

Why So Angry?
I couldnt find anywhere appropriate to piut this rant other than here, Taz. I suppose that my first question is:
1) Are You Being In Any Way Sarcastic?

2) Why So Angry? Where do you fall ideologically between these extremes? I of course know im closer to the middle.

Muddied waters
This just in. A 10 year old girl just gave birth in Columbia. But the police can't do a damn thing to the father because... wait for it... it's some kind of tradition in that tribe and we have to respect and be polite to their backwatered ways of life. I don't care how politically incorrect this sound, I don't care if it's your tribal tradition or whatever. If it doesn't make sense, then screw your traditions.

I think you have pretty much screwed this story up to fit your diatribe.

From the articles I have read, most of which look like they have come from a common source, they don't know how old the father was. I have seen figures quoted from 15-30. Would your rage gland be less inflamed if the father was a 12 year old?

You also simplify when making out it is simply a matter of respecting traditions. It is more a legal matter of the tribe having their own sovereign jurisdiction. This is similar to the way that the US authorities derogate many legal issues on tribal land to the tribes in what is called "inherent sovereignty".

You might make a case that it was 'liberal commies' who formed the framework for this sort of tribal sovereignty but there doesn't seem to be a coherent reason to blame their delicate politically correct sensibilities for the fact that the law doesn't allow intervention in a specific case.

TTFN,

WK

P.S. The important thing is that you have found a way to feel superior to both sides

I have never heard of a country called Columbia.

I find it extra funny that the so-called Latino guy here (Cubano), has no clue that it is Colombia, and not Columbia. You are busted gringo!!!

Yeah! - America should become:

Who cares what laws other countries have!

First, I want to see America bombing abortion clinics in Great Britain.
Then, I want to see America bombing Germany - because even if socialism isn't actually illegal, we all know it is wrong.

News just in: a 17 year old girl just gave birth in the UK. But the British police won't do a damn thing to the father because... wait for it... it's some kind of tradition in the UK and we have to respect and be polite to their 'back-watered' way of life. But only perverts would allow girls to have sex under the age of 18!!

Are you saying a 9 year old is mature enough to make the decision herself? What about a 5 year old?

Your response is a perfect demo of what I meant by being in the extreme of anything. Sure, we respect other cultures. Does this mean we should stand idly by and watch the pope resurrect another inquisition or the Chinese to resurrect linchi as a form of punishment?

Again, if anything, the responses in the thread so far proves my point. People seem to think that since one extreme is bad the other extreme must be good. Or something like that. I'm not screwed up enough to understand the extreme positions that people have taken.

It's certainly troubling, Taz, but what is anybody supposed to do about it? We can't police another country.

some random thoughts
This just in. A 10 year old girl just gave birth in Columbia. But the police can't do a damn thing to the father because... wait for it... it's some kind of tradition in that tribe and we have to respect and be polite to their backwatered ways of life. I don't care how politically incorrect this sound, I don't care if it's your tribal tradition or whatever. If it doesn't make sense, then screw your traditions.

'Screw your traditions': I'm sure there are people in the Arab world who say that kind of thing about us.

What to do? Do we allow the tribes to govern themselves or do we force our governance upon them? In this case it appears that the tribe is allowed to use communal medical care, so an argument could be raised that they should follow the communal laws.

Do you know much about the history of the Wayuu people's relationship with the Colombians? The Colombians I believe have used force against them in the past. The current self-governance regulations seem to be in place as a compromise to avoid further unnecessary conflict. I can't find anything concrete, but I saw an article on the web somewhere that alleges that paramilitary forces have engaged with the Wayuu as recently as 2003.

If we force them to abide by Colombian laws then there is the risk of a violent reaction.

And what if the women of the Wayuu are retrospectively comfortable with the way relationships are governed in their society? It is difficult to change a culture of oppression when the oppressed willingly don their chains.

From what I can tell, marriages of young girls is common. A practice that is meant to insure the virginity of the bride belongs to the husband. To police this would require criminalizing tens of thousands of men. This is not something that is trivial to carry out.

I do agree, however, that the emancipation of women, is something that benefits every society it happens with - and that without it women are routinely exploited (and yes I appreciate that even with it exploitation can occur).

Can we change the culture of child abuse? Is this best done by arresting thousands of men? Would arresting only those men whose wives seek medical care be a good idea, or would that simply result in more children dying as no medical attention is sought?
