I think it is necessary.
I'd put it the other way:
Consciousness is necessary to being sentient.
Sentience > Consciousness

I'd consider sentience and consciousness to be synonyms.
Sentience is more that just consciousness, it involves subjectivity and requires more thinking than just being aware.
