I had a discussion in the pub last week that I'd like to bounce off the
EVC crew. It is my belief that there is such a thing as universal taboos. I used a example of a Neanderthal stalking a female and copulating with her by force. Those who I was having this discussion with contended that the concept of "Rape" has yet to be invented therefore rape did not exist.Nor does rape exist in the animal world. I believe just because there were yet any "laws"against it or that the word itself was not yet uttered, prehistoric rape existed. I could be wrong, but that's just how I see things. This speaks to the subjective nature of morality verses a unwritten code of what seems to be universal taboos and a quasi-objective morality. Thoughts anyone? Hi Stile,
So when I say universal taboo I mean it in a general sense.Of course not every culture or species adheres to "all" rules, laws or morals. Example being cannibalism.
Stile writes: Agreed. There's a very big difference between saying most do this or that vs. saying all do this or that. I suppose my original query relates to whether or not we can impose our modern human morality on prehistoric man? Or even take it one step further and impose it on the animal kingdom in general. It seems that rape is one of those things that does not hold up to being something that is intrinsically wrong. It is, as I found out a common form of reproduction in the animal kingdom that is not called rape per se but "forced copulation". I suppose the same could be said of early hominids as well."You were not there for the beginning. You will not be there for the end. I'll see your Drake Mallard and raise you the Angler fish.
The male of the species will bite a hole in the female and encase himself in there ready to mate when the time is right. In the deep depths of the ocean there is not much oppotunity to run across another example of yourself. Dancing with the one wat brung ya is the way to go in this instance. Davidjay writes: Atheists and their cousins evolutionists can not explain altruism, acts of altuism, symbiotic relationships, etc etc... If you poke around the site's past discussions you will find these topics have been discussed ad nauseum. If you believe that living organisms other than humans can be altruistic and develop symbiotic relationships then I would ask you to correlate that with your belief that these things only exist because humans alone hold the monopoly on altruism and symbiosis .If you doubt that other living organisms possess the ability to be altrusitic and establish symbiotic relationships I would invite you to do some personal research and reading up on just those topics in nature. If you are un-interested in learning about such things because they may conflict with your religious beliefs them perhaps your placing a limit on the God you espouse to believe in."You were not there for the beginning. DavidJay writes: My religion is love, yours is competition and survival of the meanest and toughest and most selfish. Can you eat love? Let do a thought experiment: I put you in a room and offer you love to eat or food. We shall see by and by which religion you will choose when the selfish surviving animal that you are begins to starve to death."You were not there for the beginning. Faith writes: Yes you can eat love because love is an action aimed at helping others with whatever they need. If you could eat love then wtf are people in places of profound famine dying from? When a mother's child dies on a dried up breast; it is not love that is lacking. People who talk like this have never experienced true hunger."You were not there for the beginning. Consider the biome of our gut contains more genetic diversity than our own and is influencing human health and behavior on a level we are only now beginning to understand, it is giving new meaning to having a "gut feeling". So perhaps we owe some of our morality to the bugs in our digestive tract too. Or maybe like the Zombie Ant our behavior is being driven by some unseen biological process yet to be discovered.
