Are you talking about stand alone homes only or does that apply to condos/apartments too? It's interesting as I live in an older neighborhood near downtown Orlando (built up in steps in the 30's, 40's and 50's) and we have little 2/1 bungalows as small as 800 sqft that are fine. Of course now they keep tearing down all the little houses and are putting up 2500-4000 sqft homes.
Unfortunately, our city council in its infinite wisdom won't allow houses less than 1000 square feet to be built.

I don't know what the specific rules are for apartments. I suspect that the 1000-square-foot rule is designed to maximize property taxes, so there are other ways to do that with apartments.

I think tiny homes are a great idea, and not just for homeless people. Unfortunately, our city council in its infinite wisdom won't allow houses less than 1000 square feet to be built. So one structure with four 10'x25' apartments. Enjoyby our ability to understand Rebel☮American☆Zen☯Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. we have little 2/1 bungalows as small as 800 sqft that are fine That's the size of our flat; and this is not considered small here. I guess there are different priorities here though - people want to live close to the centre of the city so we cram ourselves in tight. I am still a bad hoarder, though. One of the plus points in buying this flat was that it has a space in the cellar where we can shove stuff; and is designed very well from the point of view of storage space in the flat itself. Hoarding is definitely not only an American thing, although I have noticed that minimalism seems to be in fashion at the minute. I live in a cluttered mess - never been concerned about fashion. The most fascinating type of hoarding to me is longterm storage. There are a surprising amount of people who pay very large amounts of money to keep items in storage for years or even decades for which they never return.

I am still a bad hoarder, though. I was at one time a compulsive data hoarder. I collected huge numbers of files of music that I never listen to, videos that I never watch, audio and print books I never enjoy to and software programs that I would never install or run. I cannot even blame the huge collection on sex. There is absolutely no porn in the entire collection. There is instruction on some obscure programming languages that I have no intention of ever learning. I remember one particular search for an instructional video showing basketball shooting by JJ Redick. After a long online search, culminating in finding it and storing it in a digital format, my son and I never watched the video. My jump shot remained an ugly (but serviceable) mess all the way up to the time when a couple of knee surgeries required that I not try to shoot jumpers anymore. The physical manifestation of my habit was several terabytes of the stuff stored on digital media. I started out with data on floppy disks and then saved my data onto CDs when CD writers became affordable. At one point, I transferred the bulk of it from CD storage to DVD storage. I learned smartphone programming by writing an app to hold a searchable database indexing most of the collection. Of course, all of that excess fits into a footlocker that slides under a bed or fits on the top shelf of a closet. I believe it is an example of the same type of hoarding that fills my MIIL's house full of thrift store stuff that she claims she is going to wear, sell, or give away. On the other hand, my compulsive data gathering could not fill up my house, even though in hindsight the acquiring and saving impulse seems just as strong and pointless as any other hoarding I have seen. It is just that ones and zeroes don't take up much space and data storage does not cost much money. I will probably be moving soon, and I doubt that much of that data will make it to the next house. At the rate which I manage to read them now, there is no possibility of me actually finishing the collection I have within an average lifestyle, but I still keep acquiring more. As you say, this is not a space concern, since a few external hard drives take up very little physical space; unlike the ever growing pile of dead tree books. When I sit and think about it, though, the time I spend gathering and filing the collection could be much more productively spent reading more of what I already have. I do wonder if this behaviour is a modern manifestation of something that made sense for a stone age hunter gatherer.

I do wonder if this behaviour is a modern manifestation of something that made sense for a stone age hunter gatherer It seems a very powerful impulse. I have done pro-bono work with the tenant/landland court, and even the threat of eviction in two-weeks is not enough to get some elderly people to let go of stuff they have hoarded. Humans don't seem to have many instinctual behaviors, and many folks seem to be triggered by some loss or event in their lives. That does not seem to explain the disks full of stuff I never find the time to enjoy.
since a few external hard drives take up very little physical space Not a space concern, is right. I suppose we'd have to define data hoarding in terms of the number of devices that never get hooked up to the computer after becoming full, instead of the number of rooms full of stuff we can no longer enter. I've got some of them too, for the Commodore 64. On the other hand, I've still got a Commodore 64 that works, too.
