Dear Admin,

After making 33 posts, I have been given a member rating of 1.

I have not abused anyone or accused anyone. Nor have I insulted anyone. I have not violated any rules here. So I am a bit puzzled at the value and meaning of this rating. May be it carries no value and has no meaning. Why then is it there?

This member rating of 1 discourages me from participating in this forum. It is not the figure that is an issue, it is the rating itself that is an issue for me. I feel insulted and offended.

I also feel I should get the message and move on to the next forum where I will not be judged or rated. It saddens me because I have just started to enjoy this forum. I think there are some intelligent souls here and I have had the opportunity to debate with some of them. I must admit that my experience here is a lot of fun and I genuinely enjoyed it.

As far as I know, this is a forum where people can debate and discuss issues. This is not a forum restricted to particular points of view. So, expressing one view or the other should not be taken as an opportunity to rate someone low or high. As long as someone has not violated the rules of the forum, he or she should not get discouraged by the system of the forum.

This is not a school or a university or an exam. This is not even a competition. So judging and rating only discourages people from staying here.

I agree I am in no way compelled to be a member here. I understand that I am free to stay or leave. I also am aware that most people will advice me to leave if I am not happy with how things are here. But I just thought I will let you know of what concerns me. Not many people would have done it, I am sure. Most people would have quietly walked away.

In my humble opinion, if you want more people to join your forum and stay here, abolishing the 'Member Rating' will prove beneficial.

Kind regards,

Europa

May I suggest you grow a thicker skin, and also recognize that the member rating system means absolutely nothing.

To be frank, I ignore such features of whatever forum I'm in. And particularly in a forum in which there's discussion of issues that members could be expected to strongly disagree with each other. It really should come as no surprise that those whose position is in agreement with mine might rate me higher than those whose position is in opposition to mine.

In my mind, obcessing over such ratings is an ego thing. I had been married for 28 years and was summarily dropped for absolutely no reason after several years of mistreatment. Believe me, the last thing I would have is any ego.

Such ratings are meaningless, so simply treat them as such.

Please, an "Abolish Member" rating.

Now that is an interesting idea.

I'm just having a bit of fun here. I'm not really suggesting anything.

I am using firefox, with three tabs open. The tab open to the current thread has a tab title showing of "EvC Forum: Please Abolish Me..."

At present Europa is showing a member rating of 3.

I have not come across a forum with actually useful member ratings. That ratings are meaningless seems to be the nature of the beast.

I feel insulted and offended.

Feeling a bit sensitive, Europa?

Understand the member rating system is subjective, capricious and arbitrary.

At present, it means nothing. Something Our Fearless Leader is working to correct.

Even with an effective system in place you are not going to last long in this place if your ego is so fragile.

Regardless, you have two options:

1. Swallow hard and buck up
2. Go away

The choice is yours.

3? I would swear that when I posted he hadn't even reached 2.0 yet!

Guess that shows how meaningless those ratings are! {grin}

The fact of the matter is that your posts in your Question on how Evolution Works thread demonstrate that your understanding of evolution is limited and you seem unwilling or unable to learn from those who know more about the subject than you do. While most here would not rate someone's posts low because of a lack of knowledge, they will if it's paired with an unwillingness to learn.

Bear in mind, nobody is rating you. They are rating the quality of your posts.

If my interpretation of what you have said in that thread is incorrect, please feel free to set me straight.

Evoking Zeus Doesn't Pay
The post you were rated a 1 for (your only rated post up to that point.) evoked Zeus to avoid an obvious reality. That is worth a 1 rating.

We Want You
Europa writes:

Hi Europa. I heartily welcome you to EvC. I hope you continue to participate. We really need you to balance the membership ideologically.

I don't know how much we agree to, but you raise some good questions and points for the majority evolutionist constituence to debate on.

Here are some things to keep in mind relative to the ratings.

    1. The ratings of new members with few posts can change rather suddenly due to the small number of posts to average. I see that since you proposed this topic, you are, as I type, now 3.4.

    2. The nature of the beast is that the ideological majority tends to rate their kind high and their ideological counterparts low. Likely if the majority here were creationists that problem would remain.

    3. Relatively few members are vindictive enough to indiscriminately slap 1 ratings on someone they don't like. This has happened to me and I see with you as well.

    4. Admin has improved on the system recently to remedy the problem of one vindictive member indiscriminately dishing out 1 ratings. This is why your ratings recovered so quickly. If one member fills a page of your messages with 1 ratings, say 10 of them, the system does not recognize 10 1 ratings.

I was once for removing the system, but though I get mostly low ratings, I'm for keeping it. There are actually things like minded members can do to keep the system fair. There are times when if a creationist is obviously given an undeserved 1 rating I will make an effort to give it a 5er if I like the message. Conversely, if I feel a member is given an undeserved 5 I may lower that to 3 by a 1. The five and a 1 appears to balance out to about 3. I see others apparantly do some of that as well. This is not something that should be abused as well, however. Members should work to be fair and balanced.

Anyhow, Europa, do please stay. The ratings are not that important. What is important is that you keep on keeping on doing your best. I like mixing it up and debating people who, in my view, need my message. The more I debate them, the more I see them as sheeple, educated through the assembly line of elite secularistic academia which has programmed their minds all the way from pre-school to doctorate or what ever level of education they've achieved into evolutionism and the BB, denying the possibility of higher intelligence existing than what is on the human level.

I'm often admonished by some that I need to stop stubbornly refusing to learn, when in fact I am anxious to learn truth. Imo, they are the ones in the dark. So on go the debates.

Be nice now. At the time Europa posted his/her message, the "1" rating may well have been reality. That rating can change fast as others also do ratings.

Zeus was the Greek chief of the gods. Konrad Zuse was a mechanical engineer in Nazi Germany who was also a pioneer in designing digital computers.

Your call as to which you had meant.

PS
FWIW, Europa is German for Europe. As well as being a Phoenician princess in Greek mythology.

Re: Refusing To Learn?
Subbie, this charge of unwillingness to learn seems to be your way of saying, unless you learn and accept the way I see things, you're ignorant and refuse to learn from me

I'm often admonished by some that I need to stop stubbornly refusing to learn, when in fact I am anxious to learn truth. Imo, they are the ones in the dark.

It's quite possible to learn something without agreeing with it. I'm sure you've heard of Kurt Wise. He understands how science works and he knows the evidence is against him. He refuses to accept it because he thinks the bible says otherwise. My charge of unwillingness to learn has nothing to do with accepting anything. It has everything to do with understanding what science in general, and the ToE specifically, say.

Buz, old bean, if you were to actually, accurately summarize any part of the ToE, and then say, "But I don't agree because my religion tells me otherwise," I'd be immensely impressed with your willingness to learn and your honesty about your position. However, almost everybody here knows you will never do either of those things because you are either too stupid to actually learn anything, or too dishonest to admit your motivation.

Or both.

The only possible exception is you. It's quite likely that your stupidity is so deep that you don't understand how badly uninformed and misinformed you truly are.

Do you know what the difference is between ignorant and stupid? The cure for ignorance is education. I've yet to see a cure for stupid. So, enjoy wallowing in your stupidity.
