The folks with indian accents are scam artists.. hang up on them.

To get rid of your nagwear, I would install GWX control panel

I don't know my operating system. I thought it would be easy to find out but for Low Tech me it's not.

Faith, can you describe what the bootup screen looks like on your computer. From that we would be able to tell which version of Windows you are running. Here is a link to a website that has all the bootup screens over the years. Page 12 is XP, then Vista, 7, 8 and 10 follow.

Also, she can open My Computer, then click on System Properties if it is there.

I don't think she should ignore the encouragements to upgrade to Windows 10.

Since the process is different in each version of Windows I thought it would be easier to have her identify the bootup screen.

You're right she probably should upgrade to Windows 10. I personally still haven't upgraded my computer but will do so soon. I wanted to see how many horror stories about botched upgrades hit the web before I took the plunge.

Others may be able to cope with "botched upgrades." For me it would be a nightmare I simply could not handle.

Just for the record, you probably would be better off biting the bullet and upgrading to Windows 10, but if you don't want than there are a couple of options.

1) As Ramoss said, install the GWX Control Panel. Infoworld has a page about the steps to take to do so.

2) Microsoft has a page describing how to do so but it involves editing the registry and that can be a bit scary as you can render your computer inoperative if you mess it up.

I guess there are really is no good path for you to take on this as they all involve messing around with your computer settings.

Edited by kjsimons, : No reason given.

Faith, are you comfortable with uninstalling an update? If so, all you need to do is uninstall the get windows 10 update which was KB3035583.

Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

OK, I'm going to start considering doing this because you and Percy have recommended it. I certainly don't want to mess with my computer settings which the other options involve so I'd leave things as they are rather than take on that problem.

But I'm afraid of Windows 10 being too much for my computer, apart from normal "botched upgrades." Techs often downgrade things to get my computer to function properly. I think I probably have Windows 7 because of such a downgrade way back when.

I have a lot of problems as it is with extreme slowness and the whole system hanging up from time to time. That has sometimes resulted from the popup suddenly appearing, and I often end up having to force-restart the system and even then it sometimes doesn't solve the problem.

In that case, the link I posted has a download for a untility that will get rid of that popup stuff..

You can also click on disabling upgrading to windows 10 all together.

I did that for my computers.. but they are 5 years old already, and by the time windows 7 won't be supported, it will be beyond time to get new computers.

Thanks very much. It's all rather overwhelming at the moment but eventually I'll make use of the advice here.

Thanks to all.

Advice?

Linux.

I don't get any Win10 popups. I don't get any on my Vista system, either.

Also I've been getting calls from people with Indian accents claiming to be from Microsoft or Windows.

I laugh to myself, and hangup. It's easier for a linux user to recognize that this is a scam.

I did and then didn't
Last fall I did upgrade but after a couple of weeks with little slownesses (that I might have imagined) and a few things I didn't like in the interface I backed out.

That went reasonably well actually except for a couple of programs.

I will go to Windows 10 as the free upgrade starts to run out.
