By "it" do you mean the scientific method or the theory of evolution?
The latter is off-topic for this thread. But if you mean the latter, the short answer is "in many ways". Digging up a fossil is an experiment.
An experiment is an observation carried out under controlled conditions. Especially it includes the controlled observation of the
effects of a past event; we can observe the past without recreating the events of the past.
