Essentially, upon brain death, does your 'soul' die? Note: {When I say 'soul' I'm not using my definition, I'm trying to ascertain yours}.
To me, a soul is basically ivolved with mind, will, emotions--and, basically, ideas. When I die, I know that my ideas...my beliefs..my feelings...will no longer be expressed through my body. What I don't know is if these characteristics unique to me will cease to exist or not.
My Belief is that they will continue....either in communion with a universal Spirit (Holy seems appropriate) or otherwise...(also undefined)

all research is being done by humans. Could we even conceive of the animals doing the research on us? That to me suggests at least a minor difference.

Show me an answer with no meaning and I will have a meaningless answer.
I am woman, hear me roar, eh? I suppose that IF a soul is the mind, will, and emotions, a wood slug would be unable--as far as we can tell-to be able to shout out its own existence.
I suppose part of this argument hinges on the idea of man being one of many animals....each as valuable in God eyes as the other---or whether we are unique and set apart in the grand scheme of things.

Re: What is a soul
Im suspecting that what he meant was that God exists despite our belief or non belief of His existence. I have known a few atheists who claim to be theologians, however. There is a vast difference between knowing about someone and knowing someone.
Getting back to the concept of soul, I might ask the question:
Do souls make any sense without God? If so, what are they? Energy without a corporeal body???
