That it would. However, it has also been suggested that Da Vinci might well have been clever enough to realize that a newly woven piece of cloth would not be the best choice for a convincing forgery. Also, there is just some possibility that an older cloth (perhaps even an alleged shroud sans image) somehow becoming available could have been the catalyst that instigated the scheme in the first place.
