There used to be a Video Games thread, but I think it was in the old Free-for-All thread, so I thought I'd start up a new one. What are people playing? I'm anxiously awaiting World of Warcraft, which I played a bit in the open beta, and it was awesome. Got rid of my Gamecube so I haven't played on the consoles in a while. I hear that Halo 2 is really awesome.

But I have to admit noting fills me with more geeky nostagia than a good game of "Joust." Ah, you must be rockin' that Midway Arcade compendium, where they took all those classic arcade games and dropped them on one disc for the Gamecube and other consoles. If not, you should be. Joust is fun. I prefer the old-school multiplay of Gauntlet. "Don't shoot the food..."

I just beat the Countess. Is that all? You aren't anywhere near the cool parts, then. You're like the guy that waits 5-6 years to see the first Matrix movie, and then is all like "it was great, but not that great." No, of course not. Your memories of it haven't been magnified by the passage of time, yet. It gets way better. My favorite part is when you journey to the desert city and plumb the depths of ancient tombs for treasures beyond the dreams of avarice. Man, I love doing that.

I just get this sinking feeling like the gameplay isn't going to be wildly different from what I've seen so far. Well, no. It's not going to suddenly turn into an FPS, or something. It's going to be an action RPG in an isometric view for the whole game. You're going to level up about 50-60 times, each time gaining an incremental boost in power as well as the occasional new ability on the skill tree; you're going to collect incrementally better weapons and armor; you're going to explore dungeons with wierd layouts because they've been generated at random. If that doesn't turn you on, then you're better off with the sandwich. Me, I can't think of a better way to waste an evening.

Sigh... guess I'll keep plugging through, see what the big deal is. Leveling up, finding treasure, improving your armor and weapons. That's pretty much it. If you're not excited by that, then you're really not playing the right game. Sorry, buddy. Which character are you playing? Sometimes that makes a difference. I played an assassin and that was fun. The sorceress was cool, too.

My roommate swears blind that around act II it'll become much more interesting. That's certainly a more enjoyable part of the game, but maybe you'd enjoy a character with a little more strategy. I personally found great enjoyment in the traps and martial arts of the assassin class. (Though that class is only in the expansion. Which you should have, because its awesome.) Just a suggestion. Then again, if you like wading in and beating the shit out of stuff, barbarian's good for you.

By the way, speaking of vidio game alignmnets, does anyone here feel guilty if they do something bad in a vidio game? It's more like, I never feel like "evil" is really represented as a character choice in games. On one hand, you have "good", and then your only other choices are "selfish" and sometimes "insane." So in games where it matters (Knights of the Old Republic) I usually wind up doing the "good" thing, because I can never see what I have to gain from the "bad" thing.

Has anybody been following the Starcraft Ghost game? I have, to some degree. It sounds really cool, but I've heard that they can't quite decide if they're going to make a stealthy creeper game or a run-and-gun fragfest. And apparently Blizzard has farmed out the project, so I'm a bit dubious.

Brilliant Video Game journalism
Here's a moving piece that shows how video game journalism can rise above simple holiday shopping guides. On one hand, this is just a guy who was skillful/got lucky in a video game. On the other hand, this guy was a real hero, in the sense of "good v. evil", unscripted-heroics, legitimately badassitude. A hero to gamers, anyway.
