But then wouldn't you have to check also the 3 besides the B and the 6? The 6 might NOT have a B on the other side and the B might have a 3 but you still don't know if the 3 has a B on the other side or not.
but I get your general point and obviously need to think it through further. This message has been edited by Faith, 10-10-2005 04:51 PM

OK, take the 3 card. There's 2 possibilities:
Is the first one consistent with your rule?
Is the second one consistent with your rule?
So both possibilities are consistent with the rule. Since there's no other possibility of what might be on the other side of the "3" card, then you don't have to check it. No matter what's there, it's not going to "break" the rule. Ben

Cool test Shame I didn't get chance to participate, but at least I managed to use my finger to cover up your answers on the screen while I worked them out!

Got it. Next time I'll take more time to think through the instructions. But that was such an odd way of wording it, "Did you know that "not a consonant" means a vowel?" and untrue to boot, that I didn't expect much consistency.

In addition to the right answers, which I'm pretty sure I answered correctly, I also checked others to in order to make sure the conditions were valid for everything else. I guess I did it wrong.

roxrkool,
It would be necessary for a biconditional (q if and only if p), but for the simple conditional (if p then q), the condition ~p is left unspecified. So, "if i run then i stink", what about if I don't run? Nothing's said. But "I stink if and only if I run", then if you run you stink, and if you don't run you don't stink. I think one of the major factors in the task has to do with this whole simple conditional / biconditional condition. I think (for a few psychological reasons) that we basically treat conditionals (especially abstract ones like the ones in this test) as biconditionals.
I guess I did it wrong. That's a WHOLE other debate The problems I gave can each be mapped to deductive logic problems... but the necessity or validity of doing so is really highly questionable. This is a test as much about how people interpret sentences as it is a test of deductive logic, maybe even moreso. I'm much more interested in understanding how people understand the questions than anything else. And thanks for running the experiment! Ben

Cool, I'm glad you enjoyed it
I actually put the URL back in the opening post; there's no reason to stop people from running through the experiment and / or making comments on the contents / instructions / etc. Ben

You want your results given to you publicly or privately Nosy?
Suddenly things have changed from a logic test ... to a confidence test! Ben

that was such an odd way of wording it, "Did you know that "not a consonant" means a vowel?" and untrue to boot Yeah... well, that's one reason we go to school! Hopefully next time I'll do a better job with my manipulation. On the whole, given the amount of time I was able to put into it (not as much as I would have wanted, that's for sure!), I was happy with how things went. The paper I wrote was about the same quality--rushed, but on the whole informative. Had a few nice colored charts, tables, etc. in there Thanks again for running through this for me! Ben

Publically is fine with me. I don't care who knows what. After all look at the posts I make in front of everyone.

Definitely of the better scores out there. See http://EvC Forum: Please take a run through my online experiment! (as in NOW!) -->EvC Forum: Please take a run through my online experiment! (as in NOW!) for the questions. If you're not sure on a question, I can help break it down. Good job! And thaks again! Ben

Any way for you to get my results hun? You have access to my IP. If you don't have time thats ok, I totally understand. If you can, just mail them to me. Unlike Ned, I am sensitive and don't want my blunders public fodder. LOL

Hi Asgara,
I referenced Ned's by the date of his post. I don't want to reference IPs, because I could break anonymity if I really started doing that. If you want your score, I'd ask that you mail me your IP. Checking IPs was done only to make sure I didn't screw up the data collection. I don't want anybody to worry that I'm going to start matching IPs to names. Maybe being overly careful... but I think that's the right thing. I'll be happy to forward you your results queen And thanks for running through the experiment! Ben
