Its interesting how finely balanced this appears to be at the moment. I suspect that there might be something inherent in the nature of this poll to produce parity. That is, people are being flushed out of the woodwork to support their team when they fall behind.

Yeah, I have to say that I'm surprised how close the poll really is. Its good. Some people are apparently theists that I would have certainly pegged them as being atheist. I theism is a bit ambiguous because that could encompass many different beliefs, whereas, atheism is pretty straightforward. Not gonna have any denominational rivalry there, aye?

Hmmm. I seem to have dropped off the list. Probably as a result of someone protesting the poll's methodology - which I thought was a pretty silly objection to an opt-in, non-scientifically valid poll anyway.

You hit the nail on the head. I didn't want to take you off the list, however, the methodology was placed into question. Now, everyone has to be specifically tell me in their words and in this thread what they want to placed as. But you and Tusko have been added.

That's not true at all. This list has nothing to do with the creation/evolution debate. As you can see, the Theist list contains many prominent theistic evolutionists. And of those that voted as Theists, there are only a handful who are Christian and creationists. There are very few here.

I think that covers all the basics.

All responses have reasons behind them, some of which are easily, if not completely, traced in this forum.

Some of the anwers have surprised me. Some are theists that I would have pegged them for Agnostics, and some Agnostics I would have pegged as an atheist, all based on how and what they argue in defense of on this forum. I've learned alot from this poll.

As to your second point, while there may be reasons why one does or does not believe in God, once belief is presumed, there are many ways how one believes in God. There is pretty much only one way how one does not believe in, or is undecided, about belief in God. The 'how' of belief automatically becomes irrelevant. The 'how' of belief, as it is personal and not subject to scientific proof, to paraphrase Einstein, becomes as diverse as the personal characteristics of the beliver, provided one does not become overly enraptured by other personalities, be they living or presume to speak from a position of absolute and unquestioning authority for their interpretation of past events. Therefore it should be no surprise there is a tremendous variety among self-described theists.

I was thinking that we could first take this poll which is very generalized, very broad, and then widdle it down by specific belief. I thnk it would be interesting. And the reason, as you pointed out, there is a tremendous variety of self-described theists, who most assuredly, do not agree theologically. I'd be interested in understanding how they all came to their conclusions.

That would be me, as well. I don't view agnosticism as being "undecided" on the existence of god(s), for me it's more of a disinterested abstinence. I neither believe nor disbelieve, but if pressed I default to disbelief.

I would venture to say that most agnostics tend to lean towards atheistic tendencies. When I was an agnostic, I was definately leaning towards atheism, but, I understood that simple principle that I could not disprove a negative. However, there are two people who posted as agnostics who claim they lean towards theism. I have an agnostic friend who leans towards theism as well. I know they are out there, but I believe them to be outnumbered by default atheists.

NJ, could I suggest that you change the thread title to something like:

"Poll re: Theist, Atheist or Agnostic.

This will make it easy to locate down the road.

If you can't change it but would like it changed I can do that for you.
