Is Haggard apologizing for his infidelity or for his gayness?
In my opinion, he is not apologizing at all. He is doing damage control.
Bingo. So far he has not acknowledged any behavior that hasn't been proven--and he did not acknowledge that until it was proven, the hallmark of damage control. I'll take bets that another Haggard intimate shows up soon.
Takers?
I noted Driscoll's blame-the-woman blog in the first Haggard thread. It is a recurrent pattern among evangelicals--indeed, in the Christian tradition. It's so handy to blame straight male misbehavior on Mom, sis, and wifey (i.e., Eve): she made me this way, she asked for it, what did she think I would do, ad nauseam. We would greatly benefit from a regime of matriarchal corrective.
The need to find an external, blameworthy cause is paramount, else one might suspect other rabidly anti-gay evangelicals are also closeted and projecting (Driscoll, anyone?). I have always enjoyed listening to my gay friends play "Queer or Not A Queer" (very similar to "Jew or Not A Jew" on vintage Saturday Night Live).
As Jim the Two-Spirited Cherokee once said to me about another TV evangelical: "Just look at his hair! That man is queer as a N'Orleans queen!" By the way, has it occurred to anyone besides me that the typical portrait of white-bread Jesus is awfully...pretty?
I thought Mrs. Haggard was pretty cute. Maybe she'll consider a metrosexual the second time around...maybe she'll find a nice girl.
