Hi Schraf,
While I agree with you that Fox and particularly that nitwit O'Reilly provide absolutely crap news coverage I would have to agree with Rhrain that there is absolutely NO good news coverage by major papers or networks in the U.S. The New York Times is supposedly a left newspaper...try reading something from the left wing in Europe. The right wing is also a bit different in its presentation, though the right wing (not the far right) in Germany would be far to the left of the democratic party in the U.S...like Gore Vidal said, the U.S. has a two party system with two right wings..(my paraphrasing) I subscribe to the Economist...it is a conservative UK weekly. I disagree with them on a lot of issues (particularly since regaring either Iraq or the UK..they are so disappointed with the failure of the torries they have taken up the US republican banner and absolutely uncritically cheerlead every stupid thing Bush says or does)...but they cover areas of the world in depth that the major news outlets in the US would never mention...and living in Germany as an American..what the hell else would I read in English?..Time (crap)...Newsweek (more crap)..Herald Tribune...USA Today?. I also read some news in German and watch the nightly news...but I don't find their news outlets to be a whole lot better than what there is in the US except that they do a better job of covering science...overall, media coverage of world events, politics, etc. is really pretty pathetic.

I like NPR as well..though I have not had access to it for a couple of years now. They did a segment on my extinction work years ago and they were one of the few to send a reporter that knew what he was getting into, asked good questions, and did not totally spin our words into something totally different from what we wanted to say.
The funny thing is everyone I knew listened to NPR in Michigan but nobody did in NYC... Anyway, my guess is the number of people listening to Fox news dwarfs the NPR audience by many orders of magnitude... and so much for my reading the Economist...I just read that they were part of a project with the Pentagon to make a terrorism/assasination futures market where you would invest money say to bet that someone would kill Yasser Arafat and if you won you would get the money from the investors that bet it would not happen. It would have included bets on potential missle attacks by North Korea etc..and another group involved is headed by John Poindexter..one fo the lovely Iran-Contra criminals....what a great world we live in

1990-1996 in the Human Genetics department...I used to head to concerts in Detroit fairly often and was in your neck of the woods a couple of times i.e. WSU...though I never did meet Goodman...but then I was not doing anything evolution related at the time..I jumped on that bandwagon when I started my first postdoc.
What killed me about Michigan is that Detroit, Ann Arbor and some of the suburbs were typical northern towns/cities...but if you drove about 15 to 20 minutes in any direction you ended up in the boonies with scenes straight out of the movie Deliverance...on the other hand, I am from upstate New York originally and I coulds say the same thing about it as well. O'Reilly's core audience does not care if what he says is a lie, a distortion or whatever..they are concerned only with nodding in unison and puffing up their chests with false pride...there are probably even books on how to master the technique for these guys..Tai Chi and Consequential Nodding for Nitwits...

I will have to check his books out..hopefully I can get it at Amazon...the English books sections here are a bit sparse and I don't know that he would have been translated into German...Michael Moore has become a superstar here in Germany...Stupid White Men has been on the top of the bestseller list for months and Bowling for Columbine was a major success..some of it is because of typical USA bashing that the French and Germans are into..but people are also fascinated that he says what is on his mind in a time where you are told to shut up and wave your flag faster...

I did not meet Hezy until I started working at the AMNH..he gave me some samples..and he was curating the L.cyclotis collection in my department..apparently before I got there he used to come to the museum with his pet hyrax.

Hi Scott,
He is a great guy...I think he is still in Eritrea...he had to come back for a while when they went to war with Ethiopia though. But when things settled down he went back to his elephants.
