Thanks for that Meldinoor.
Wow...
wikipedia writes: In April 2002, Robertson acknowledged owning a race horse, named "Mr. Pat." He told a New York Times reporter that his interest in the horse was based purely on its aesthetics. "I don't bet and I don't gamble. I just enjoy watching horses running and performing." Harder to explain was why he spent $520,000 on the horse and intended it to compete at the track. But the resulting furor over Robertson's direct participation in a gambling racket eventually caused him to sell the horse a month after the Times story broke Despite death threats(Robertson's Christian equivalent of a "fatwa" on Hugo Chavez), homophobia, and ties to nasty politicians that have subsequently been indicted for war crimes (Charles Taylor, Liberia), it was actually gambling that caused a furor hehe. The things this man says should be considered hate speech, and he should be just as condemned as any radical islamist. I DARE any Christians to defend this guy.

Pat Robertson is proof positive that there is no all-knowing, all-powerful, loving god. Any such being would have struck him dead years ago, or at least rendered him mute.

How could Haiti make a pact with an entity that doesn't exist?
As for the Dominican Republic being prosperous and Haiti being in poverty, it is not the only place where there are rich and poor in close proximity to each other. Check out various places in the US. =BritericanI wish there was a hell for this guy to rot in Leaving aside the issue of what standard you hope to measure him by, I'm not quite sure what your objection is. He suggests the Haitians made a pact with the devil. We are agreed this is either true or false. If true then I don't see much issue. Making a pact with a person along the lines of who the devil is supposed to be would certainly invite all sorts of trouble But if false (either they didn't or they did but he doesn't exist) clearly there is no issue either. All you have is a guy who believes the situation to be as described above - one about which there can be no issue. You seem to be condeming a guy for believing something that, if true, would reasonably be the case.

Pat Robertson is both an idiot and a zealot, and doesn't have the sense to keep his idiotic opinions to himself.
Does that about sum it up? Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

The problem is not simply that he believes these idiotic things, but that he shares his hateful lunacy with a television audience, most of whom presumably believe the lies he tells, thus spreading the poison.

Pretty much everyone else considers this a natural disaster. Pretty much everyone else considers Robertson a senile fool. Most everyone on earth wants to alleviate their suffering rather than blame all the men, women, and children in the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere for such a calamity. Iano uses sophistry to defend Robertson. Sick. The idea of the sacred is quite simply one of the most conservative notions in any culture, because it seeks to turn other ideas - uncertainty, progress, change - into crimes. Just hours after saying that God was punishing Haiti for making a "pact with the Devil," televangelist Pat Robertson retracted the statement, telling TV viewers, "Haiti? I thought they said 'Hades.'"
Pat Robertson: Haiti?! I Thought They Said "Hades" | HuffPost Entertainment
Rev. Robertson said that he had heard the report of the earthquake on the radio and had misinterpreted its location: "For the life of me, I thought God was punishing Hades, which does in fact have a pact with the Devil." Apologizing for his "goof," the televangelist told his TV audience, "Golly - people must've thought I was being an insensitive asshole."

Ah.
Well, that clears that up then. Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. But which Robertson does Iano defend? My guess would be both. The idea of the sacred is quite simply one of the most conservative notions in any culture, because it seeks to turn other ideas - uncertainty, progress, change - into crimes. Wikipedia writes: Haiti is a largely Christian country, with Roman Catholicism professed by 80% of Haitians. Protestants make up about 16% of the population. CNN.com writes: Death toll may top 100,000 And Mr Robertson suggests that 100,000 primarily Christian individuals were killed because of something that a few people did 2 centuries ago. That bastard son of a mangy mongrel has no idea of the devastation and pain this event has caused, and if he didn't have his head so firmly nestled up his arse he'd stop blaming the victims of this natural disaster. -Meldinoor

While I respect you as a person, professional, and a debater on this forum, I must disagree with you on this point. Pretty much everyone else considers this a natural disaster. Pretty much everyone else considers Robertson a senile fool. Surely, Robertson speaks for a major portion of the population. His revenue proves this.

But if false (either they didn't or they did but he doesn't exist) clearly there is no issue either. Well, there's that pesky commandment against bearing false witness.
