Author | Topic: God and the size of the universe. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

So far as I understand God created all that exists for man (am I wrong in that assumption?), if that is the case then why is the universe so vast? Seems to be a huge waste of space seeing as how man's purpose (whatever that is) should be achievable on Earth.
Maybe God has other projects going on in other parts of the universe?

jar writes: There might be some Christians that might think that but it is certainly not supportable. Well I guess you could take man out of the equation and the question still stands, why is the universe so vast? If life on Earth is the only beneficiary, hell even if there were life on other planets, why spread everything out so much?

jar writes: HUH?The universe is the size it is because that is the size it is right now. Life on earth is here because ... we happen to be on earth. You seem to think the universe is here for man. Man is simply one of the things there. You might as well ask why there are stars. We're here because we're here because we're here because we're here... This isn't what I believe at all, I said thats what I've heard Christians say. What I'm trying to get at is why would God create one small habitable zone in a massive dead universe? Whats the point of all that useless space out there? I'm not asking why the universe is the size that it is, I'm asking why would GOD make it that big?

First, we don't know that there is only one small habitable zone. We are the product of where we are. What you call a habitable zone is really only a habitable zone for us, and that is only because we evolved to live under those conditions. I only said one small habitable zone for the sake of this argument. I personally bet that there are more then a few habitable zones. And I know that Earth is only habitable to us because we evolved here, again thats not what I'm getting at.
Sure there might be Christians that actually believe and even say the silly things you claim, but not all Christians are that ********. I've always been under the impression that Christians generally believe God made man in his image, and if he did that I'd assume Christians would think that the universe was created to house man. Unless they believe there is some other reason for there being so much more to the universe, why have so much stuff that is not needed for the existence of life on Earth outside of Earth and the Sun?

There may well be some Christians that actually believe that, but not all of us are that ********. From reading the forum for the past year and a half or so I get the sense that you aren't what I think of when I think "Christian", so do you think the universe is the size that its just because thats the size that it is? No knowable reason, just take it as it is.

I'm trying to get thoughts on God's possible reasoning for the size of the universe. I know no one could know God's thoughts (either because there is no God or because he IS God), and while that answer may be enough for some its isn't enough for me. Whats the point of a boundless universe where less then .000000000000000ect% is being used for anything meaningful?

Because whats the point of creating everything and then putting a self-conscious sentient being in the middle of all that everything if you aren't going it for that being.
I mean really if God went through all that "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" and then goes on to have a book written where the main character is the human race one would think that the main character in the universe according to someone who believes the bible would be man.

Buzsaw writes: In order for you to get a handle on what the Bible teaches, regarding inhabitant of the Universe, the best way is to read up on the Bible. Honestly, I read most of it when I was younger and all I got out of it was confused. And I'm not saying that to belittle the Bible or anything, I love reading but the Bible is a mess of weird wording and phrases that mean nothing to me.
Buzsaw writes: here are many different creatures such as legions of angels of different status, etc. Do you mean that you believe angels actually live physically somewhere in our universe? I'd always thought of angels as being outside the universe like God. Same goes for demons unless either manifests on Earth.

jar writes: Well, since humans wrote the Bible stories is it surprising that they made humans the central character? Well yeah but MOST current day Christians seem think of the Bible as the Word of God, regardless of who wrote it.

You'd think that God would at least leave a list of what should be included. I would indeed think so. I don't understand why many Christians don't see that rather glaring problem with the bible(s).

Buzsaw writes: In order to stay on topic, I won't delve further into that science topic, having given my 2 cents worth, relative to your statement. If I offended you I wasn't trying to, I really never thought of angels or God as existing on the same "plane" as "normal" existence. The image I've always had of God has been something beyond the physical. And I've always pictured angels as being with God when not poking around in our business.

Buzsaw writes: Cool, Coyote, except that I would have replaced the proper noun, "Universe" with the proper name, "Jehovah," and replaced the word, "Sir" with the phrase, "Our Father, who are in Heaven, had I composed it. You wouldn't say God has an obligation to his creation?

Buzsaw writes: Imo, it's arrogant of itty bitty humans, existing on this speck in our Solar System called Planet Earth, which is a tiny speck in our Milky Way Galaxy, being, itself a tiny speck amongst all of the existing billions of galaxies, etc, to think that theirs is the highest level of existence existing in this vast wonderful Universe. I don't really get the arrogance thing but I could see how someone who believes that there is a higher power out there could see it. Frankly I think its a bit arrogant for someone to believe that their personal "higher power" is the highest level of existence existing in this vast wonderful Universe. You can't spell "believe" without "lie".
