It comes down to Sun owning OpenOffice and Oracle buying out Sun.
If it is open source, then one doesn't own it. More correct would be that Sun owned "Star Office", and they opened up what they could give away (not licensed from anyone else) for "Open Office".Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

Sorry, that isn't true. Sun controlled Open Office. The only way to get out of that control - without Sun relinquishing it - was to fork it. And that's what happened.

Remember that excel formula you helped me with a while ago? Well, I loaded that document into both of these programs and I liked Libre better here too. ... I do, and that is one place where MS is better because in Libre you have to manually insert the $ signs. The way they move and copy cells is also a little different.
Based on these little things, I think I'd use Libre over Apache. But I still can't get over them both lacking the asterisks for footnotes... it's so strange. Curiously I went to insert footnote and chose the "character option" and entered "*" and it worked fine?

RAZD writes: It does word documents, spreadsheets, slide shows, draw and all can be saved in microsoft formats just as all microsoft documents can be openned and used in Libre\Open Office programs. What about excel documents that use VB programming to do stuff, is that also compatible/convertible?Can you do the same VB stuff in Libre spreadsheets as you can in Excel?

Curiously I went to insert footnote and chose the "character option" and entered "*" and it worked fine? Yes, but MS does it automatically, keeping track of which footnote you're on. Which is especially helpful, because once you get to the daggers, the only way to insert them is through the character menu. Word counts up just like with numbers, only using the symbols, going from asterisk to dagger, etc.
I do, and that is one place where MS is better because in Libre you have to manually insert the $ signs. Maybe your version is older than mine, but I can enter -50 in a cell formatted for currency, and it will automatically switch to ($50.00).Love your enemies!

Sorry, I was not clear: I was referring to absolute as compared to relative references. In a cell formula you can use "D3" but when you copy it two cells over and one down it will reference "F4" but if you used "D$3" it will reference "F$3" and if you used "$D3" it will reference "$D4" and finally if you used "$D$3" it will reference "$D$3" -- in ms you could tab through these options quickly. I have now found the same functionality in Libre using shift+F4 -- thanks for making me look. by our ability to understand Rebel☮American☆Zen☯Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. Since my PC is 6 years old, in 2020, it will be 11 years old. That's plenty of use for what I paid for it (assuming it lasts that long).

We're starting a local low power FM radio station, and we have a hoard of albums as computer files.
I'm in the process of cross checking a hard drive's content versus a partial database we have, adding finds to the database and noting database listed albums that are not on the hard drive. One thing I am doing is noting the bitrates of the albums. The bitrate is not one of the attributes displayed by default, thus I have to left ciick to open the attribute selection box, and then right click to select the bitrate attribute. Now you may say, "that's just a little mouse movement and a couple of clicks". But I'm doing literally thousands of albums and that little action adds up to significant effort and time. Is there some way to set a default, such that the bitrate (and maybe also the time length) attribute will automatically display? Running Windows 7. Please, someone tell me how. I might save a portion of my already limited mental capabilities. Doesn't help.
If I do that in the root folder, all the subfolders then have a "bitrate" attribute column, but there is no such attribute to display. The "bitrate" column isn't displayed in the subsubfolder, nor for the audio files withing that subsubfolder. Nice try though. For what it's worth, the drive structure is: Drive
Artist name folder
Album name folder Tune file listing In other words, I click on an artist name folder, and it opens to display 1 or more album name folders. I then click on an album name folder, and it opens to display the list of audio files for which I'd like a bitrate attribute displayed by default. The (4) default attribute columns are Name (as is file name) - # (as in track number) - Contributing artists - Album Moose Another added by edit: The scope of my project: I'm currently working on the M-Z drive. There are 1660 artist name folders, plus a various artist folder containing many subfolders (approximately 1/4 of the drive total content). The database currently has about 7000 entries (A-Z), and it's growing. I've already added 467 albums, and I've only covered A-E so far. The M-Z drive also has a lot of A-L because it originally was artist by first name then last name. I had to go through an chanage things to last name, first name. There were also a lot of "The" band names - Eg. "The Allman Brothers Band" got changed to "Allman Brothers Band, The" This is looking to be a several hundred hour project. Maybe a glitch?
Mine works fine. I know this sounds simple, but are you sure the window has been made wide enough to show all of the data you are looking to show? ABE: Never mind what I just said, I realize now you can see it in some places. I think I found the solution. Open the folder where you've displayed bitrate, etc. Click Tools>Folder Options>View>'Apply to All Folders' This will apply the view settings to all the folders on your computer. Well, I sort of got in the vicinity of what your talking about, albeit a different path. Still didn't work though.
One problem is, your descriptions and the photos at the link don't look like what I see on my screen. Nothing above the address line shows for my set up, including the menu line containing "tools". I presume there's a way to get that to display, but I can't figure out how. ----- More Googling happens ----- OK, I now got the menu bar to display, complete with the "tools". It seems that I can set things to have a bitrate column for all the folders and subfolders, which is worthless since folders and subfolders don't have a bitrate attribute. But when I open a subfolder containing music files, there is still no bitrate attribute column displayed. Pretty much and probably exactly the results I got before activating the menu bar. Somewhere it must be defined that "Name", "#", "Title", "Contributing Artists", and "Album" all automatically display in folders that are all or dominantly music files. Now, if I could only get "Bitrate" added at that "somewhere". Moose ABE - Damn, did some more futzing, the same things I thought I did before, and now the bitrate column is showing up for all the music files. Edited by Minnemooseus, : ABE
