The thing is, as a coping mechanism, that is the best thing to do.
"Catharsis" doesn't really help. In fact, it can make your angry feelings even worse. When you get angry and upset, doing things like punching a pillow, screaming and yelling, all these sorts of "let it out" solutions may make you feel better immediately after, but they don't actually help you reconcile your feelings and actually make it worse when you finally get a chance to do something about it.
If you want to get past the anger, you have to distract yourself, distance yourself from the issue that is making you so upset. Then, when you come back to the issue, you are more likely to respond in a calm, reflective manner.
Somehow, though, I don't think that's what they were getting at with the question....
