sometimes the abyss looks back
Deeper into the pit,the abyss, the downward spiral he goes... It's all absurd, It's all arbitrary. Get over it already robinrohan No one here wants to follow you into your personal
de-nihlism. "Sometimes when you look into the abyss, the abyss looks back at you." Neitzche

Re: Oh, hell...not another "atheism = nihilism" thread.
Hi Robinrohan,
I believe many here as well as myself have grappled with these existential questions for some time now. We have become desensitized to some degree. Just remember there was a infinite period that you did not exist, and shall come a time when you will not exist. You were not aware of the period that you did not exist, nor will you be aware of the time when you will not exist. So you are spending the time you do have worrying. Peace.

Re: Back to the "the horror"mumbo jumbo
Hi Parasomnium,
I once got into a discussion about "what is real"/ what is illusion.
with a collegue of mine. He was on the slippery slope of nihlism and becomming ever anxious about whether or not one could tether they're existance to some objective truth or reality. I feel that reality, (whatever that is) largely depends on our perspective. Like the example of color you used. I now think that the old saying " what ever blows your hair back" really does apply. If believing in God or "what ever blows your hair back", gives one a sense of peace or comfort then that will be translated into they're lives in a positve way, which in turn becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. The man who says the square on the computer is blue, is the final realization of that instant in time. We actualize our existance I believe. Hope this doesnt sound like to much mumbo jumbo..

Re: Back to the "the horror"mumbo jumbo
Hi Parasomnium,
I do believe in a objective reality. (on a macroscopic scale).
BUT......when you get down to the "nitty gritty" (lol) of what actually makes up reality I am not so sure there is anything except energy. And what exactly IS energy? I dunno.
What I meant by "The man who says the square on the computer is blue, is the final realization of that instant in time."
Is that our observations and perspective make up our reality. Or We realize our own reality by our interactions with the universe and vice versa. IMO.
If one is a nihlist and believes that there is no 'reason de entre'
that reality and existance is arbitrary and absurd, then that will become a self fulfilling prophesy so to speak.
There is alot to be said for the power of positive thinking do you agree? .
