Crows and Cane Toads
Not so much a 'tool' as an approach.
With the introduction of cane toads (Bufo marinus) into north Australia in 1935 to combat beetles in sugarcane, we added a new threat to our wildlife. Ignoring beetles, cane toads proceeded to decimate the smaller native creatures (frogs and other amphibians, snakes, birds, etc.). Crows used the SOP so well proven on their prey and attacked the head of Bufo and most died as a result of the poison glands there. Some high-IQ crow worked out the safest way was to tip the critter over and now this has spread through the crow population.
Homo sap has 'developed' a variety of tools to counter the cane toad.
* a golfing 7 iron (lifts object over fence into neighbour`s yard)
* put toads in bag. Tie to car exhaust. Start car.
* bag and kill in freezer (post warning notice on door for midnight snackers)
* use vehicle to press road 'carpet')
* drop salt or disinfectant on individual(sure, but slow method)
* flatten with shovel (usually takes 6 whacks)
* kamikazi approach (fill toad with LP gas. Drop on bar-b-cue)
For those unacquainted with Bufo

Re: Car Surfing
Our magpies (black and white bird the size of a crow) tend to rule the roost in the avian world. And not just other birds. I got in the habit of putting a food tray for maggies out on my back landing after breakfast. Trouble was, if I had a late night and slept in, there would come a tap-tap-tap-----pause---tap-tap-tap at the back door to give me a hurry-up.

Re: Car Surfing
Ranging far afield (in the proud traditions of EvC), cleaner fish are a delight to watch. They pick a favourite rock and the customers (usually out-weighing them 100 to one)actually queque up for service. Prey behavior goes on hold as they open mouths and flare gills for inspection. If a customer leaves before the cleaning gang are satisfied, he/she is chased and herded back to the cleaning station. Many a time I nearly drowned myself laughing as I sat, snorkel in mouth, at the antics of these servicemen.Does they emit pheromones to tell the neighbourhood the station is open?

Re: Chimp Gender and Tools
Back to not-so-wild gorillas. Koko has no problems using her TV and VCR. I`m still trying to get the hang of where to point the remote. Too high. Too low. A little to the right.Bang the battery cover, etc.

Re: Tonight's Nature is on the subject.
Tool use, which was previously thought to be a skill only of primates -- humans and chimps
Hi, Jar, wouldn`t you say the use by sea otters of stones balanced on their bodies to crack open shellfish, would be 'tool' use?
All these actions, percussion, fashioning and using sticks, car surfing, etc. seem to me to point to a degree of reasoning and remembering. And isn`t this what is said to elevate humans above the animal world?
