There was an article in our local paper this morning that pegged Oklahoma as one of the ten most depressed (psychologically) states.
In the coffee shop, we asked the guy reading the article to read the happiest states:
quote:
The happiest states: South Dakota, 1; Hawaii, 2; New Jersey, 3; Iowa, 4; Maryland, 5; Minnesota, 6; Louisiana, 7; Illinois, 8; North Dakota, 9; and Texas, 10.
I made the remark that Texans probably just don't know any better.
Sorry, Coragyps.

Progress in human affairs has come mainly through the bold readiness of human beings not to confine themselves to seeking piecemeal improvements in the way things are done, but to present fundamental challenges in the name of reason to the current way of doing things and to the avowed or hidden assumptions on which it rests. -- E. H. Carr

What happened to this woman's first amendment rights?
Well, the First Amendment protects the right of free expression of an individual acting as a private individual. It doesn't protect people who make comments on the authority of their position -- an employer or organization may place limits on an employee or officer acting in her official capacity (and therefore representing the organization).
Also, if the position is basically a political appointment, then the appointers can basically terminate her position for any reason that they want.

If it's truly good and powerful, it deserves to engender a thousand misunderstandings. -- Ben Ratcliffe
