What Characters do you play?
So, when you role play do you tend to stick to a character type of do you play differing classes or archetypes?
I tend to play the intelligence based characters that are good at talking and coming up with fantastic plans or bullshitting my way past people.
I'm not too bother about melee but I loved shoot outs.
What about you guys

Relax fellas, I certainly do consider myself a nerd as well. There's a rule in comedy, you only roast the ones you love.

Relax fellas
No worries, all role players are by definition a bit nerdy.
What type of character would you play if you did role play?

My oldest daughter, 13, just started playing RPG with a (team?) of kids in school. I never payed but I always hung out with the D&D crew. Actually, IIRC, the first time I ever tried pot was with the D&D crew.
What type of character would you play if you did role play?
I have no idea lol. How do you even get started on designing a "type" of character?
This is the only type of role playing I've ever done (about a minute in).

To take it back to its roots you have fighter, wizards, cleric and thief.
So; your big tough fellow, your nerd with fireballs, you wise priestly type, and you Han Solo rogue.
Pretty much everything in role playing games boils down to these archetypes.
ABE: nice to see you in the flesh.

Can they be combined, or are they always seperate? IOW, can you have a wizard/theif, or a cleric/fighter?

Ok. Well if I can't combine, I'd say theif. Wizard/theif would be cool though.

Re: What Characters do you play?
I guess I must have played most of the basic D&D classes except bards. Bards are interesting characters, but the rules for them suck.
Mostly I've enjoyed playing thieves and priests. With tea-leaves you get to be a bit of a scoundrel. The subterfuge aspect really appeals. Priests are fun to play because their religion gives you something to hang the character on. It's easier to work out what makes them tick.
Shadowrun is a great game for creating PCs. There's loads of choice and you can tweak them endlessly to create almost whatever you want.
Sadly I don't get to play as often as I GM. That's OK though. GMing appeals to my inner control freak.

Re: something for the nerds
You can combine them: you would be a multi class wizard/thief.
Of course this would mean that you would have to be either an elf, half-elf or gnome.
You can't wear armour but you can use short bows and short swords, can back stab and cast spells.
Your hit points will be teh suck, how ever.

Re: What Characters do you play?
Yeah, bards do suck. My friend used to insist on playing one and would have a grand piano as his instrument. He would cart it around with his barrel of pickled fish he thought was so important.
Used to love GMing Shadowrun 'cause the stories would pretty much write themselves; Mr Johnson wants you to bust into Renraku Arcology to steal x, y or z. Add in a supernatural twist (bung in a wendigo scientist or the Mr Johnson works for Dunkelzhan or something).
Not sure what I think about the mechanics of 4th edition Shadowrun.
I normally don't play (I GM for the same reason as you, it appears) but I've been enjoying the chance I've had lately.
I kind of agree about the inner control freekery: I often don't like how other people run games and end up trying to sidle into the GM role.

Ok, cool.

Is this normal throughout all RPGs? Are they all about elves and gnomes, and whatever fighters and clerics are?
The only one I'm familiar with, and very little, is D&D.
You can't wear armour but you can use short bows and short swords, can back stab and cast spells.
So like Legolas from LotR mixed with Gandalf skills? Or would your wizard skills not be at Gandalf levels?

Elves tend to be fairly common in fantasy setting (to the point where Talislanta was advertised with a "No Elves!" slogan). The class system is less common (although warriors and priests are pretty common in fantasy games).

Re: something for the nerds
Think of the genres that you can have in novels (well, apart from chick lit) and you can pretty well find a role plating game to deal with it.
The most obvious one is the Middle Eartheasque world with elves and dwarves and humans. This is where D&D is typically set.
Or you can go for a contemporary setting dealing with horror (World of Darkness), Espionage (Spies unlimited) etc...
Then you get you futuristics such as Shadowrun and Cyberpunk (near future) or Traveller or Star Wars (far future).
Pretty much any fictional universe can be used as the back story for a role playing game (I've played one based on Aliens, Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica and so on and so forth...).
Peter Jackson had a real boner for elves...

Re: What Characters do you play?
Everyone loves the pickled fish! We had a Lawful evil campaign running a few years back, where we all played the members of an undead-worshipping cult. We carried zombie pickled fish.
Real cultists eat 'em while they're still wriggling.
I've not seen 4th ed Shadowrun. I thought that 3rd did a pretty good job of combining a big pile of books into one and cleaning out some of the rubbish rules.
I kind of agree about the inner control freekery: I often don't like how other people run games and end up trying to sidle into the GM role.
I find that too. There's always a back-seat GM! It is handy though, since the best way to get familiar with the system is to run the game. It can make things run more smoothly when a player or two fluent with the rules.
