Religion becomes a serious problem when it uses force or law to promote its beliefs.

You can rub blue mud in your naval on alternate Thursdays for all I care, but when you try to force me to do the same or try to teach your beliefs in public schools you've crossed the line.

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

Belief gets in the way of learning--Robert A. Heinlein

How can I possibly put a new idea into your heads, if I do not first remove your delusions?--Robert A. Heinlein

It's not what we don't know that hurts, it's what we know that ain't so--Will Rogers

If I am entitled to something, someone else is obliged to pay--Jerry Pournelle

If a religion's teachings are true, then it should have nothing to fear from science...--dwise1

"Multiculturalism" demands that the US be tolerant of everything except its own past, culture, traditions, and identity.

Theology...
Theology is never any help; it is searching in a dark cellar at midnight for a black cat that isn't there.

Re: Theology...
Which group do you think is right?

I tend to ignore the religious beliefs of all 40,000 or so extant world religions.

That number alone should provide a major clue...

Men rarely if ever dream up a god superior to themselves. Most gods have the manners and morals of a spoiled child.

A religion is sometime a source of happiness, and I would not deprive anyone of happiness. But it is a comfort appropriate for the weak, not for the strong. The great trouble with religion - any religion - is that a religionist, having accepted certain propositions by faith, cannot thereafter judge those propositions by evidence. One may bask at the warm fire of faith or choose to live in the bleak certainty of reason- but one cannot have both.

Robert A. Heinlein, Friday

Re: Clerk refuses to issue marriage license to gays
So, just to check. When you thought the End Times were going to involve death, famine, pestilence, war, locusts with human faces stinging people, the reign of the Antichrist, and so forth, you were actually looking forward to that ... but instead you find that the future holds such terrors as people you'll never meet contracting a marriage which is none of your business, and now you're horrified. That's just nasty.

Ooooooh, that's gonna leave a mark!

Re: Clerk refuses to issue marriage license to gays
That's as stpid and blasphemous as...

Of all the strange crimes that humanity has legislated out of nothing, blasphemy is the most amazing - with obscenity and indecent exposure fighting it out for second and third place.

Re: HRe: Clerk refuses to issue marriage license to gays
I don't know if you're nuts or just malicious as usual, but if I issue a license for a GAY MARRIAGE, I am in tacit agreement that gay marriage is acceptable, which I cannot allow because the Bible says it's a violation of God's law.

In this case I am not participating in the ceremony itself or having anything to do with the ceremony, I'm just giving a license for a marriage that is illegitimate according to the Bible.

You are not giving the license, the state is.

Hmmmm
http://detroit.cbslocal.com/...endants-constitutional-rights

FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) A Muslim flight attendant has filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEO) claiming she was suspended from her job for not serving alcohol which is against her religious beliefs.

Lena Masri, an attorney for the Council of American Islamic Relations Michigan (CAIR), says Charee Stanley followed managements directions, working out an arrangement with her coworkers to accommodate passenger requests for alcohol.

However, Masri said, ExpressJet Airlines put Stanley on administrative leave after another attendant filed an Islamophobic complaint that referenced Stanleys head scarf.

We notified ExpressJet Airlines of its obligation under the law to reasonably accommodate Ms. Stanleys religious beliefs, Masri said at a news conference in Farmington Hills on Tuesday. Instead, ExpressJet close to violate Ms. Stanelys constitutional rights, placed her on administrative leave for 12 months after which her employment may be administratively terminated.
