He wasn't risking a few years of crappy room and board from the state if he got caught, he was risking death. You have, as usual, got this entirely ass-backwards.
Could you perhaps elucidate, quoting the appropriate verse, precisely what worse-than-stoning punishment he would get if he took the entirely prudent step strangling her to shut her up?
