This is how I see it: "God" belongs to Religion while "Evolution" belongs to Science. One is about Faith while the other is about the scientific-method. A scientist may have a "pet-theory", and going against his or her training, may refuse to give it up in the light of evidence, observations, inferences, and/or tests to the contrary. Such people don't gain respect in the Community of Peer-Review, niether do they get far in their scientific careers. The vast majority of scientists go places because they tend to stick to thier training, which means the methods of science which necessarilly do not allow for questions of a religious nature. Scientists do indeed recognize that there are "laws" of nature, and there does seem to be a "system governing what exists" as you say. Whether this "governing system" can be attributed to a god(s) is not a ? that science can answer. Scientists don't have faith in evolution; it's an observed natural process. Scientists have faith in the scientific method which has been used to show that evolution occurs. As a former pastor used to say,"Faith works". Well, the scientist's faith in his/her method works also. If it didn't then "Darwins' dangerous idea" would not have held up under the blistering critical scrutiny of science for this long, niether would I be able to write this post.
