Firefox is easy to install and works far better than IE. You do need to keep IE available because there are a few (very few) sites that specifically look for IE before allowing downloads.
You can get Firefox here

Yes it will bring along bookmarks.
Windows updates are simply for windows and IE.
Firefox has had a few security updates but not anywhere like IE.

Re: Just installed Firefox
In the upper left you should see Mozilla Firebird Help.
In addition you can go into Tools ----> Options ----> Software Updates and check the boxes to get it to check for updates regularly.

Nope. But then neither does MicroSoft. They announced over a year ago that they were dropping support for Outlook Express. No more security updates, no new versions.
You can still use Outlook Express and Firefox will inteface with most any mail program you use including those from M$.

Re: Firefox lock ups
Go into the config mode (about:config). In the filter type the word 'down'.
Check the settings and see if the default directory might be set to A: or if the A drive is listed.
Next filter for 'sav' and see if you have set things to automatically save to disk without asking.

Re: ddl file
Look for dll, not ddl.
I'd start with putting it in system32.

Avant is nice. I keep IE, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Maxthon, Avant and Opera on my desktop to use in testing web pages. Of those, I would say Avant is probably my second choice.
