another thing to consider is spyware: pieces of software downloaded with adds that then collects data on your usage and sends it back to their databanks. they keep piling up and take cpu time.
try Ad-Aware Adaware: The Best FREE Antivirus & ad block
or SpywareBblaster BrightFort
I use both (they work differently)
when I first installed Ad-Aware there were over 200 spywares on my machine
