The US Constitution grants the presidency to the winner of the Electoral College. The winner does not require a majority, only a plurality. Well, yes - we already know the problem. We were discussing better systems to replace this.

Exactly. One better system would be when state representatives would be compelled to vote for the candidate getting the national majority for a Federal President. That would be democratic.

Story about Trump claiming that the Finns go out and rake their extremely extensive forests:
California wildfires: Finland bemused by Trump raking comment - BBC News I can think of three possibilities: 1. Trump's simply lying, secure in the knowledge that his support base doesn't give a crap that he lies, or will believe that the Finns are lying instead. 2. He's too thick to understand what was being said to him. 3. He got bored listening to someone's voice other than his own, and invented some ludicrous bollocks to fill in the gaps in his recollection. Any other thoughts? I know two guys, one half Finnish and his cousin 100% Finnish. I can confirm that Finns are not simpletons and do not rake forests. They're usually too busy drinking highly priced alcohol, or having a sauna. Edited by vimesey, : No reason given. Actually:
4. The Finnish President has a bet with his fellow world leaders as to which one of them can make Trump say the stupidest thing.Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

That can't possibly be a bet as Trump always says the most stupidiest things. Evah! Stupedialism.

Yes, it's a bad time for democracies with Trump around.

Also - minor point - Finland's climate is a little different to California's. Just a tad wetter. And maybe a bit cooler?

Trump is a bullshitter, he wants to blame California for the fires, and his base don’t care about the truth. We have ample evidence of that.

Indeed - maybe Trump could arrange for large chunks of Finland to be cut up and exported to California to reduce the risk of the fires happening again ;-)

Percy writes: I've shifted from condemning Avenatti to waiting for more news. Well, more news has finally arrived. We now know who the complainant is and the details of the complaint: Michael Avenatti accuser says he dragged her, left her with marks on skin Summarizing, the complainant is actress Mareli Miniutti. She's been in eight or so movies. Her website is down (http://www.mareliminiutti.com). She says she and Avenatti got in an argument over money, that he appeared threatening, hit her with pillows, yelled at her, grabbed her cellphone, then dragged her out of the apartment and out into the hallway in her underwear and T-shirt, during which she was scratched. She says it's not the first time he's been aggressive with her. She's taken out a restraining order against Avenatti. I believe the woman. Until proven otherwise Avenatti has disqualified himself as a politician. Stormy Daniels, Julie Swetnick and the unnamed complainants against Trump should fire him as their lawyer. --Percy

I believe the woman. Until proven otherwise Avenatti has disqualified himself as a politician. He may well be guilty, but this is a guilty until proven innocent system. In what conceivable way might Avenatti "prove himself innocent"?
