Wow. That's all I can say.

Could it be that the Invisible Pink Unicorn just farted?

I dunno, that color is pretty clearly false purple, not false pink--and purpledawn has seemed a little upset lately. So maybe it's the billowing Smoke of Purpledawn's Wrath. Don't curse for a few days, and we'll see if the bubbles clear. I wish we knew how old they are. Dost thou prate, rogue? -Cassio Real things always push back.-William James

I wish we knew how old they are. I am probably uniquely unqualified to address this question but don't gamma rays move at the speed of light? Wouldn't this make them 25k years old?

But seriously, Dogmafood's suggestion seems unlikely to me, because that would mean that they would have popped up incredibly recently in comparison with the age of the Milky Way. We'd be very, very luck to be "around" when it happened. I think the radiation itself doesn't emanate from the centre of the galaxy, but is the result of colliding gas clouds or some such thing. The extend of the bubbles would then not suggest an age of 24,000 years because the gas would probably be moving at much lower speeds than light speed (though still very fast, to account for the gamma radiation). But I am no cosmologist, so don't take my suggestion too seriously. You know, I wondered about that, too. Like Parasomnium, I though it might require the presence of a gas excited by the gamma rays. I do think gamma rays would travel the distance of the joint bubbles in 25k years, but I'm unsure about what kind of boundary that would form, esp. since the stories remarked strongly on the rapid development implied by the sharp boundaries. Unsure, as in clueless. The stories also mentioned similar "paired jets" spotted elsewhere. If I recall correctly, those jets weren't moving at the speed of light. Ima gonna haveta read more... I see what you guys are saying and that makes sense. Even though making sense doesn't seem to be a requirement of cosmology. Does this then raise the question how is the gas escaping from the black hole at the centre?

Yes gamma rays move at the speed of light since they are part of the light spectrum. Much higher frequency and much smaller wavelength.
per frequency = speed of light / wavelength f=c/k ( Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, 2006, p10-210) There is no better love between 2 people than mutual respect for each other WT Young, 2002 Who gave anyone the authority to call me an authority on anything. It's likely that the gas is not escaping from the black hole but is a combination of existing material that is already present as well as additional material generated outside the event horizon.

Ah I see. So the laser beams of death from PD's eyes are refracting off of the blue haze of hooah's posts.

Perhaps time, for our Milky Way galexy, is running out. 1st Peter 3:7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away but My words shall not pass away. 2 Peter 3:12 Looking for and hastening unto the coming of the Son of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved and the elements shall melt with fervent heat. Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth are passed away. According to Revelation 20 and 21 there will be a messianic kingdom for 1000 years shortly when Satan is chained in the bottomless pit. It will be utopia on earth. After the 1000 years Satan will be loosed again for an unstated time and rebellion will come against Messiah's kingdom. Satan and his angels will then be cast into the lake of fire. The earth and heavens pertaining to it will be burned up. (imo, likely our galaxy, The Milky Way) There will be new heavens, new earth and a New Jerusalem where the pearly gates and streets of gold, etc will be. Perhaps the demise of the Milky Way phenomena relates to this prophecy. NOTE TO ADMINS: If this is considered off topic here I can propose a new thread about it. What would an EvC thread on spooky galactic scale phenomena be without the creationist/end-times perspective? You're right on time. This is the coffee house, so it is most likely not off topic.
But it is applying ancient tribal myths to modern science. You might not want to accept this, but the track record for tribal myths vs. modern science is dismal. Below is an example of another tribal myth. Do you want to accept that too? Or do you want us to just accept your myths? The Creation of Men and Women See, Buz, there are a lot of tribal myths out there and folks who are brought up in those tribes each believe their own myths. Just as you do. Then science comes along and in many cases can evaluate those myths. Thor's hammer has fallen by the wayside, as have the global flood and the young earth. So have many, or most, of the rest. Belief is better than the required reading list of our high school days at keeping old myths alive--even after they have been evaluated by science and found wanting, eh? Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

According to the ancient tribal myths, there is no milky way galaxy. There's just a milky pattern of light fixtures installed in the domed ceiling. Right. And that's just one area where they have been shown to be incorrect or incomplete. Most tribal myths have been found wanting in one way or another... Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.
