Wow. That's all I can say.
quote:
A group of scientists working with data from NASA’s Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope said Tuesday that they had discovered two bubbles of energy erupting from the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The bubbles, they said at a news conference and in a paper to be published Wednesday in The Astrophysical Journal, extend 25,000 light years up and down from each side of the galaxy and contain the energy equivalent to 100,000 supernova explosions.
Image and quote from NYT Science News site. Their access policy is inconsistently stupid, though, so I recommend googling the story.
AbE: Me so lazy...an updated and more detailed story is here at CTV.

The Smoke of Purpledawn's Wrath
Parasomnium writes:
Could it be that the Invisible Pink Unicorn just farted?
The history of the bicameral anus? Or someone blowing smoke out of both sides of their mouth?
I dunno, that color is pretty clearly false purple, not false pink--and purpledawn has seemed a little upset lately.
So maybe it's the billowing Smoke of Purpledawn's Wrath. Don't curse for a few days, and we'll see if the bubbles clear.
I wish we knew how old they are.

I am probably uniquely unqualified to address this question but don't gamma rays move at the speed of light? Wouldn't this make them 25k years old?
You know, I wondered about that, too.
Like Parasomnium, I though it might require the presence of a gas excited by the gamma rays. I do think gamma rays would travel the distance of the joint bubbles in 25k years, but I'm unsure about what kind of boundary that would form, esp. since the stories remarked strongly on the rapid development implied by the sharp boundaries.
Unsure, as in clueless.
The stories also mentioned similar "paired jets" spotted elsewhere. If I recall correctly, those jets weren't moving at the speed of light.
Ima gonna haveta read more...

NOTE TO ADMINS: If this is considered off topic here I can propose a new thread about it.
I think it was perfectly appropriate, Buz. What would an EvC thread on spooky galactic scale phenomena be without the creationist/end-times perspective?
You're right on time.
