Re: vocal chords
...no amount of evidence would suit you anyway.
No amount at all is what you've given us, Big. Just a single reference that shows that stretching a nerve makes it "work better" would be a start. Got one?

Re: vocal chords
Hence they are clearly at a disadvantage.
Since there are so many people that have both nonrecurrent nerves and thyroid lesions, yeah, I'm sure it has altered the course of evolution......
Where's your evidence for any of this, BigAl?
These nerves have to be long and they have to be stretched. Looping around the arteries enables this stretching to occur during the growth phase in a natural way. The differing lengths of the right and left nerves adds to the vocal range that these nerves can accommodate.
That's not in the same bioinfo article that you won't link to, is it?

Can we sum up the last couple of pages by saying that since giraffes have a longer, more stretched recurrent laryngeal nerve than humans do, they can sing better than humans?
What kind of stuff do giraffes like to sing?

Re: We're still waiting
Do you predict that a function will eventually be found for the human vomeronasal organ? Or for the accessory olfactory bulb of the brain, one of which was hooked up to your VNO before you were born, but was resorbed by the time of your birth?
No, holding a toothpick in your nostril does not count as a useful function for a vomeronasal organ.....
