Percy writes: I think more guns is the answer. The Cossacks have a local chapter house around a mile up the same road from where I work. All these guys my age seem to do is "toys for tots" or "the chile cookoff." Who would have thought? But then I suppose some Cossacks are capable of "rioting."* *Rioting - a term used to connote mass acts of disobedience and lawlessness except in the USA where the term is never applied to white people. Percy writes: Turning schools and churches into armed camps is the anti-answer of the gun lobby. It wouldn't surprise me if they proposed that school and church outings require a designated shooter for defense. Texas already passed a law not only allowing, but requiring, at least some designated parts of public college campuses allow concealed carry. This should work out well, considering that in my experience the average Texan is far more driven by emotion over reason than the average person in the other three states that I have lived in for more than a year, California, New Mexico, and Washington. You don't have to take my word for it, ask Sam Houston:
quote: Some things never change. I guess I have to obtain a concealed carry permit and a Glock for self-defense by August 2017 as my workplace will then be rife with religious fanatics, Klansman, skinheads, conspiracy theorists, 9-11 truthers, and unrepentant Civil War traitors, all packing heat. Lebanon and Sweet Home, Oregon are sure looking like a good place to relocate for an early retirement.Read not to contradict and confute, not to believe and take for granted, not to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. - Francis Bacon

Tanypteryx writes: I live abot 10 miles from Lebanon and 25 from Sweet Home. They are both pretty redneck. Lots of gun nuts and general dimwits, and also here in Albany. Corvallis and Eugene/Springfield are much more progressive, but have their share of wackjobs too. My goal is to obtain a 1 bath 2 bedroom house with around half an acre under 150k as close to Eugene or Corvallis as possible. Preliminary research indicates the most likely properties are in Lebanon or Sweet Home. Eugene has University of and Corvallis has a doctoral program in history of science, so the closer the better. Naturally I require high speed internet and room for tinkering and horticultural adventures. Every city has whackjobs, and my friends and relatives even call me a nut-magnet because I listen to their stories. Every time I go to a bar, it seems the biggest looney in the place immediately makes a beeline for me, perhaps they find I am a kindred spirit.
Tanypteryx writes: I grew up in Bend and when I moved to Albany years ago I was amazed at the clear cultural differences. I worked in the analytical lab of a rare metal refinery and was shocked at the level of racial bigotry that was expressed there. There were no blacks working there then and the things I heard people say would happen if any came to work there shocked me. When a few African-Americans were eventually integrated into the workforce there were no problems and they were treated like everyone else. I'm not saying you can't pay me to live on the wrong side of the Cascades, I'm just saying the price is steep.
Tanypteryx writes: In general Oregon is liberal, but a lot of Oregonians are in love with their guns. Guns in and of themselves don't bother me, I have a rifle and two handguns in the house right now, I just don't know exactly where the handguns are because I forgot where I hid them from my late wife when she was talking shit on Prozac. I grew up with guns, my half-brother at one time owned over 100 until the first wife cleaned him out in the divorce. My father shot playing cards in half at 10 to 15 feet edgewise with handguns, a cousin not only vouching for that fact but also having kept several of the cards in question. Guns don't bother me, psychotics, criminals, sociopaths, racists, misogynists, religious fanatics, right-wing militia and so on with guns bothers me a lot. To hell with the NRA, deep background checks for all.Read not to contradict and confute, not to believe and take for granted, not to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. - Francis Bacon

marc9000 writes: But what gun control advocates don't seem to think about is the fact that it's not possible for an individual wack-job, or a citizen group of wack-jobs, to issue orders that cause massive gun carnage. I think you may want to revise that sentence considering the following: Pol Pot, Mussolini, Lenin, Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh, Fidel Castro, Hong Xiuquan, Chandra Bose, Ayatollah Khomeini, the IRA, PLO, ISIS, Hezbollah, and among others virtually every male in Afghanistan, the Congo, Somalia, Yemen, and much of Iraq. Please further define "a citizen group of wack-jobs, to issue orders that cause massive gun carnage."Read not to contradict and confute, not to believe and take for granted, not to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. - Francis Bacon

If you would like to discuss excessive government handouts to the already rich, I suggest my thread Economics 101 - Evidence Based Decision Making is the appropriate thread.
marc9000 writes: How about a global warming wack-job? People who know the overwhelming evidence are not reality-challenged. People who deny the overwhelming evidence are as reality-challenged as psychotics, criminals, sociopaths, racists, misogynists, religious fanatics, and right-wing militia. Therefore they should not be allowed to own guns without the most stringent background checks.Read not to contradict and confute, not to believe and take for granted, not to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. - Francis Bacon

I said individuals, or citizen groups not POLITICAL LEADERS like you named. Political leaders in the U.S. aren't included in any gun control laws. Neither are the vast armies of police or military that take orders from them. Isn't a political leader the leader of a citizen group? marc9000 writes: It IS possible for government wack-jobs (including the military, which you trust) to issue orders that cause massive gun carnage. History is full of examples. So because I am a US Army veteran I am a "whak-job" Because my fellow soldiers in arms helped eliminate the Iron Curtain, they are "whak-jobs" Because my parents helped defeat the Japanese Empire, they were whak-jobs, Because my uncles helped defeat Hitler, they are whak-jobs, Because my grandfather helped roll the Kaiser back to abdication he was a whak-job. Because my first traceable ancestor with my last name fought at Saratoga, he was a whak-job, You are not only too stupid to even spell whack with a spell-checker, you are too pathetic a human being to have the remotest respect for the many who gave their lives so that you might live to become a complete ..... Faith writes: Possibly in today's age of growing hostility to Christianity, and the possibility of attacks on black churches, people will start thinking of carrying a gun to church. It doesn't seem as odd to me as apparently it does to you. Churches are a common target in Muslim countries and we've actually had a woman beheaded here and a thwarted attack on a Mohammed cartoon contest. Unbefuckinglievable. Nope, the attack had absolutely nothing to do with racism, it was solely an attack on Christianity. Do you need Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch to validate your humanity? How do you even sleep at night?Read not to contradict and confute, not to believe and take for granted, not to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider. - Francis Bacon

DrJones* writes: To be fair to Faith that is not what she said. You are likely right as I am in my cups and considerably irritated to boot. If I owe Faith an apology, (which I kind of need to do in general as I have been overly vicious of late) then I will freely offer it when I am dead sober.
