I have been told that there are falling stars, and that they can be seen falling from the sky. I think I saw a few of them,or if not, some other object that I was told were falling stars.
Why isn't there smoke,ect... in space,or is there? Desdamona

First of all, it is not my opinion that you know nothing about DNA and diseases. It is a fact.
desdamona writes: Why do we have falling stars? Those are not stars falling. Everytime you see a falling star, it is actually a rock in space that has been caught by the Earth's gravitational pull and falls down to Earth from space. Once it enters our atmosphere, friction against the air molecules of our atmosphere causes it to heat up, which radiates in a form of light that you can see. In other words, it's a ball of fire by the time it reaches the lower trosposphere (the lower most atmospheric layer). Just one thing, how the heck did we change the topic from DNA to falling stars? I think she may be a little confused as to the difference between a Comet, a meteor and a meteorite.
A comet (or asteroid) is interstellar debris left over from the original formation of our planets and solar system (chuncks of ice and rock that were left over and didn't become part of the large planets or become moons)...think of it as the same thing as large fish eating smaller fish. Some fish are just to small for it to bother with...so the small fish gets away and swims around for a very long time. Comets and asteroids are that way, until they get too close to a big fish (planet)...they fly around the solar system freely and we see comets because the Suns radiation and gravity pressure causes a tail to form from debris (smoke). I've actually seen "smoke" for a very slight instant from a meteor entering the earths atmosphere. It was a clear night and the entry light of the meteor reflected back against the tailing smoke. I bet that was a one time thing! (It was the plaecides meteor shower aout 4 years ago).

Under the circumstances, I consider this thread is fair enough for questions of astronomy, even if they have nothing to do with cosmology. Let me recommend to you Meteoroids, Meteors, and Meteorites. This page is from the "Enchanted Learning" people. It is intended for children; but don't be put off by that. I use it reasonably frequently myself when I am unsure on a subject. In fact, I used it today to look for names of various dinosaurs. Lam will know why. This page is intended for grades 3 to 5, but the information is excellent, and well presented, with further links to much more advanced discussions. The "smoke" that exists in space is a bit different to anything on Earth. From the same site, have a look at the Eagle Nebula Cheers -- Sylas

Sweety, our DNA doesn't get "mixed together" except in pro-creation. By your assertions, if I touch the same nickel you've touched our DNA has become mixed...your dandruff has your DNA in it, you've probably gotten every woman thats entered your local Wal-Mart restroom pregnant with your DNA.

That's called a "train." They're unusual but not exactly rare. The fantastic Leonid shower four(?) years ago had quite a few meteors with trains, some of them lasting 30 seconds or so. Pretty stuff!

Thank you! It WAS the Leonid showers. And I did see it...a very rare treat I guess. The "train" I saw was at most for a second (I didn't know they had been seen before).

If you can get V.D. through sexual intercourse, how do you get it?
Did V.D. just create itself? Doesn't it seem likely that people caused V.D. and the STD epidemic,or do you think it was here all along? Desdamona

let's take the dna questions to Sylas's new thread.
We'll keep this one for the falling stars. AdminAsgara Queen of the Universe

P.S. please don't go crying later that we are off topic again,o.k?
But,thanks for all the info about falling stars.I'm happy that I know those so called falling stars are not actual stars. I bet the ladies out there some where who don't know all this stuff yet would think you are all very intelligent. (speaking to the guys) I'm sure it's the same for the women who are just as smart when they meet guys who are not knowledgable about it either. Desdamona

Thanks for the information. But how does the big bang explain all the stars and how they stay in place like many of them seem to do?

They don't. Look at my Avatar. That is an actual REAL photograph of a Galaxy (like the Milkyway galaxy we live in) being absorbed by a black hole. There are whole Galaxies (just like ours) out there in the universe colliding with each other. Go to the NASA Hubble Space telescope web-site and see for yourself.
You were "taught" that God created a perfect universe and it's NOT!....collisions beyond your wildest imagination have and are happening out there right now.... Des, the pictures you are being shown, aren't from some high tech science fiction movie and aren't creatin' by some really clever folkes on the internet....they ate absolutely REAL and astonishing!!!
