Danke! I like it.
I'm taking a break from debating at this moment, I just figured I'd register first and say hi. :-)

berberry is it alright if I make this deceptive behavior known. Earth said you could make a new thread but he bans you so he cant. He purposefully is trying to conceal the truth.
So can I confront him about this? I wont mention names. -one word to describe me, spectacular yes

Fine with me if you want to, chris, but I've lost interest in that site. I probably won't go back there even if I can.

This is not quite a banning; but it is my favourite moment.
I was enrolled at a forum run by Jason Gastrich. Jason at some point posted an interesting forum guideline: nonbelievers were welcome, but if they were still nonbelievers after some time limit (500 posts, or 12 months) then they would be banned. The forum has an enormous list of rules. The rule in question is:
quote: I discontinued myself the same day the rule came into effect, with no hard feelings and never a backwards glance. Cheers -- Sylas PS. I'm still enrolled as a member. What do you know. Here is my last post (Sept 2, 2003)
quote: Thanks for making me welcome. This breaks my previous comment about being a last post, but a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds... :-) I don't want to let my last word here be by default Jason's comment that I feel "rejected". I don't feel rejected; I've been made welcome here, and so I assure you that there is no problem or resentment on my part. You are, I repeat, welcome to make your rules as you see fit, to get the kind of forum you want. I've called myself a "Christian-friendly atheist" in my profile; and part of that is not imposing myself where I am not wanted. I've already had some misgivings about participation here in any case. My attempts at dialog have not worked out; fairly straightforward questions just don't get answered. Again; no problem. But if it means people are not interested then I probably should take that into account. One theological comment, however.... the threat of judgment is a lousy way to encourage one to examine their beliefs with integrity. It is, fairly transparently, mainly effective as a device to make believers afraid to question; not as a device to persuade unbelievers. I'm not anti-Christian by any means. At the risk of sounding a cliche, some of my best friends are Christians; and I have zero interest in dissuading them of their beliefs. Christianity can have good effects, and bad effects. Conversion to Christianity for an unbeliever, or loss of faith by a believer, can be associated with good and bad effects as well. One common negative effect of Christianity is fear; fear of judgement and in particular a paralysing fear of examining ones own faith. This is not universal, of course; but I'd be cautious of encouraging that aspect! People may be more likely to retain faith give such influences; but the faith is less likely to be empowering for their life. There is plenty of scope for forums and discussions where diverse people share as equals. However, not everyone wants that engagement, and consider that the biblical injunction about "unequally yoked" actually deprecates and constrains such engagement. Again; no problem. That is a choice, and I don't rebel against it. So really... no hard feelings, no rejection, no anger or resentment. Just hail fellow, well met, thanks for the fish, best of luck to you all... and farewell. -- Silas

Well I made a thread callled "deceptive moderation?"
Apparently theyre banning for moderation criticism. And they never say who's banned or not on the site. I'm glad that's made aware of here This message has been edited by chris porcelain, 02-27-2005 23:12 AM -one word to describe me, spectacular yes

I've had a closer look. The whole forum has imploded. The last post, by anyone, was on October 22, 2003, in which Jason announced that the forum was closed to posting by anyone at all; and only available now as an archive. Surprise surprise. Those wanting to continue discussions are directed to other locations Jason has set up. It's all a bit odd. Jason is a seriously creepy individual. But if you want to follow his links, here is the closing message:
quote: I have deliberately disabled the links; there has been some question of how safe Jason's links might be. I'm not sure how well founded such questions are; but to be safe, the two urls are disabled with a space.

that's a funny rule.
quote: what if you're a christian and reject the biblical god? i should go there and cause problems.
quote: that verse deals with marriage. what are they up on that board?
quote: christ doesn't strike me as isolationist. afterall, he said take the message to the world, right? how are you supposed to do that if talking to unbelievers is discouraged? jesus hung out with the unsavory sort, too. this is the exact reason athiest are so disgusted with christians, in my educated (and previously athiestic) opinion. it's called "hollier than thou." and what weak faith they must have to run away from challenges and tempations.
never a backwards glance a biblical reference. how ironic. This message has been edited by Arachnophilia, 02-28-2005 03:34 AM

Then you are not a Christian by majority definition. i thought it was about a personal relationship with god, not what the majority thinks about my opinion of how the bible represents him. also, you're probably right. i'm working on that one.

Hi, Arach! I was just being ornery when I wrote that!
Its my whole irritation with Rrhain when he tells me that he believes in god....just not MY God! I insist that God be an absolute concept that is non negotiable between humans personal interpretations. Your kind response to my jab at you shows me that you seem to agree with the God/Love concept from a heart level but that your educated mind has seen too much contradiction and inconsistency within scripture to blindly accept the Bible...and by extension the God of the Bible. You are right. It is a personal relationship. And when I throw jabs like that, please hit me upside the head with some kind words as you have done. The blessing destroys the curse!

Arachnophilia writes: what if you're a christian and reject the biblical god? Is there a difference between rejecting the Biblical GOD and rejecting the Biblical descriptions of GOD? If you look at some of the tales in the Bible and say, "Nope, those are not true descriptions but rather plot devices used to present a moral or message.", is that rejecting the GOD of the Bible or simply placing the stories in context? I was banned. I told a story about Jesus, that he wouldnt have hide or runaway from another interpretation of the Bible. then he deleted what I said and banned me. I have asked to be reinstated. I can't believe Christianity - Beliefs and History of Faith in God and Jesus Christ is representing the christians today. It's disgusting. You read threads with titles such as "why did God make women with hairy armpits and legs?".
I can't wait for Jesus to come back. An old man in a shiny white robe. Christianity has degraded to the point where you can't tell the difference between it and corporations. There will be a revolution in America within the next 50 years. -one word to describe me, spectacular yes

A new era has come. Last year every christian I knew I could speak for. I recently went to a conference and I met the likes of this online christians. Ignorant, sexist, and sometimes they are racists.
The problem was the worst one I met was the guest speaker... The christianity I know is still being spoken, I've met two that taught me. -one word to describe me, spectacular yes
