You might want to reply to Terry's message about the NG retraction being hidden away. They wrote a lengthy article about the embarassing episode in a subsequent issue that was featured prominently.
Given the ease with which the religious are duped by crying statues and such, I don't think a very strong case can be made that scientists who are temporarily fooled by fabricated data are frauds. It's the same with other examples, like Piltdown. Whoever faked the jaw and tooth was committing fraud. Whoever was convinced by it is maybe guilty of being overly credulous, but you can't list fraud among his crimes.
I think we on the science side are also too quick to label people like Baugh and Hovind conscious frauds - I think they really believe what they preach.
