So I just heared on the radio that he has won the Nobel Peace Prize for his stnace on reducing nukes and his diplomatic work:
What do people thisnk about this? Is it a good choice or not? I confess to thinking he's a good sort but does this really mean a Nobel Prize?

I like Obama, a lot, but the Nobel Peace Prize? Give me a break! The Nobel committee just came down another notch in my eyes. Here's a YouTube video I found at Google News, they agree with me, so I must be right:

I'm looking to future actions on his part to show he has earned the Nobel. Go for it Obama!

I have to think it's been a pretty sparse year on the Peace front.
I fully believe that Obama has the potential to do things which would put him in line to be deserving. But I really don't think he's at that point. One Israeli-Palestinian handshake? One canceled missile system? Not indulging in saber-rattling rhetoric? I do truly hope that he goes on to do the things to earn it.

I was quite surprised that he got the Nobel Peace Prize. I agree that he's a great guy and all, but he hasn't done much at this time to justify receiving it. Then again, maybe it was a slow year.

Days in to taking office, he bombs the sovereign nation of Pakistan, and has yet to extricate troops out of Iraq which was a major talking point during the elections. Furthermore he builds up forces in Afghanistan, which is a war effort not a peace rally.
Now he gets a Nobel Peace Prize, not even a year in to his term, for talking about reducing Nuclear arms? What a crock. First of all, we can't undo nuclear weaponry. It is here and no country who has the capability to possess them will ever not have them at the ready. For however tragic nuclear weapons are, there is that timeless defense of "mutually assured destruction" which keeps everyone on their best behavior. First Al Gore and now Obama? Clearly this institution is run by bleeding-heart liberals who care more about platitudes than a actionable steps toward world peace, (which, in and of itself is a peacenik fantasy) This is a horrible nomination. Two thumbs down. Edited by Hyroglyphx, : No reason given. I think this has to be part of the world's ongoing efforts to turn Obama into Jed Bartlett.

I think this has to be part of the world's ongoing efforts to turn Obama into Jed Bartlett. So far all he's reached is the level of Jed Clampett. Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.

I agree that he's a bad nomination, but how could the Nobel Peace Prize drop any lower in your estimation. It's long ago since the concept was stamped into the ground and urinated on. Look at some of the murderers, terrorists and warmogers who have one of these sat on their mantelpiece - Yasser Arafat and Henry Kissinger are two that spring immediately to mind.
First of all, we can't undo nuclear weaponry. It is here and no country who has the capability to possess them will ever not have them at the ready. Well that's clearly untrue. What's the major difference between Germany and France that means the Germans are incapable of maintaining a nuclear arsenal? What practical constraint limits Japan's capacity to do the same? When South Africa abolished its nuclear weapons, is this because it was incapable of maintaining them or just because they chose not to keep them?

Clearly this institution is run by bleeding-heart liberals As with most here, I too find this surprising and so far undeserved. It does make me question the Nobel committee's reasoning and motives. But H, you do realise that when you use such language, the world outside the US looks at you and simply thinks - twat. Just thought I'd point that out.

One stupid question: Has the Nobel committee ever refused to give a prize in a given year since it thought there were no viable candidates?
It seems to me that this should be the year. There is no better love between 2 people than mutual respect for each other WT Young, 2002 Who gave anyone the authority to call me an authority on anything. WT Young, 1969 Since Evolution is only ~90% correct it should be thrown out and replaced by Creation which has even a lower % of correctness. W T Young, 2008

Bluescat,
I agree that Obama clearly did not deserve nomination much less awardel of the Peace Prize. Even though I voted for the guy (and I am an Independent) to me this probably did more harm than good for the Democrats. If the Democrats are even saying that Obama didn't deserve the Nobel Peace Prize I would love to be a fly on the wall when the Republican caucus berates the poor guy. To funny for words. I think this one hurt him more.
Askmen.com's most influential man, Obama came in 3rd - The winner, Don Draper (fictional character on "Mad Men"). Two days later Obama wins a Nobel Prize. Obviously, the Nobel people didn't take Askmen.com's opinion into consideration. And a Peace prize no less. WOW - Oni

The conservative reaction has been flat-out hilarious. Typically they keep bringing up the "nationalization ofteh auto industry," inflation of the deficit...and other domestic issues that have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with a Nobel Peace Prize. The hilarity stems from the revelation of exactly US-centric these people see the world. Why the hell would the Nobel committee care one jot about the US national deficit? What on Earth does that have to do with world peace?!
I agree, however, that Obama hasn't done enough to warrant a Nobel. The man's only been in office for less than a year, and while he's managed to substantially improve international relations between the US and Europe and made lots of hopeful speeches about being willing to talk even to those we've traditionally regarded as hated enemies to find common ground, a lot of his success has come from simply not being Bush.
