I read the news today, oh boy.
One of our US units is named "regulars by God" and go out asking to be shot at because they believe they are protected by God? Is this for real? Please tell me this is not for real...

Dear Holmes,
When you're getting picked away at by snipers, you can cower in fear or scream defiance. God has nothing to do with it. When you're number's up, it's up. But most soldiers I have known are not just going to sit there and get killed. The phrase "Regulars by God" came from a reply that an Army officer made during a battle in the Mexican War (1841). In the face of heavy fire, the US Army line of soldiers charged straight toward the enemy ranks. A newspaper reporter watching the battle asked what kind of soldier would charge like that. The Army officer shouted back. "Those are Regulars, by God!" As for me... Been there. Done that. Bought the T-shirt and DVD. It's amazing the adrenaline rush you get when someone is trying to blow your ass away. Although, truth be known my case was a little different. The "sniper" was a 100 millimeter North Vietnamese artillery battery and we were a dinky U.S. destroyer sitting out in the Gulf of Tonkin with high explosives raining down. But the fear was the same. So was the anger. So was the defiance. (:raig

Dear Holmes,
I don’t know whether you remember Halloween of ’83, but things were scary where I was. Only days after terrorists had attacked the Marine barracks in Lebanon, Uncle Sam was striking back where it would really count: in Grenada. Scoff if you want, but we in the 82nd Airborne were sweating in our Kevlar helmets, parachuting onto the runway of the Point Salines airport after deciding the water was too brisk for a beach landing. It seems hard to believe, but none of us even thought we might be among the nineteen boys who weren’t going to make it home. Holmes, you pussy, I hope you never know how naked and helpless a man can feel walking around with just an M16A1 5.56mm assault rifle and an M203 40mm grenade launcher. God help me, it still brings me back every time I hear sniper fire. ------------------I would not let the chickens cross the antidote road because I was already hospitlized for trying to say this!-Brad McFall [This message has been edited by MrHambre, 09-16-2003]

Mespo, I don't mean to question your integrity, or anybody that ends up on the wrong end of a gun, but did you read the article I referred to?
Whether the origin of regulars by god started as you claimed or not, the unit in question was using it as "regulars by GOD." And they do not happen to end up on the wrong end of a gun by happenstance, nor are they bravely defying those who might mean them harm. The article states that they believe they are endowed with immortality by God. That they cannot be hit no matter how many rounds are fired at them, and the commander pushes his men (as well as himself) into needlessly risky situations to try and prove his point. This kind of hubris is not only repulsive (according to Joralex in another thread, repulsive even to God), it is putting men and equipment in harms way for no reason than religious fanaticism. Ironically the same kind of religious fanaticism and ignorance we are supposed to be fighting against. You may have noticed they even quoted a soldier that transferred out of the unit specifically because they were acting like a bunch of lunatics.

Unless you are telling me that your ship's captain maneuvered your ship in, slowing it down with broadsides exposed to the battery, and signaled the vietnamese to please open fire and put some pepper on it, because he had a magic amulet from God that would save everyone, your comparison is simply not the same. I would think anyone with experience in combat would have been appalled at the behavior of this unit's commander. ------------------holmes

quote: Oh, I get it. Only if somebody has the holy fever of god can he possibly muster the courage to go to war. Just how much courage does it take to walk into a dangerous place when you are certain that god has placed his holy mantle upon you and thus made you bulletproof? Personally, I'd rather have soldiers who were courageous enough to put themselves in harm's way but not reckless enough to ignore precautions. "You pussy"? Is that really the depth of your argument? ------------------Rrhain WWJD? JWRTFM!

Every time I eat nutmeg I thank god and Reagan that Grenada was saved from the despicable hoards overrunning its glittering shores, and curse myself for being such a pussy as to not yet have basked in the afterglow of an orgasmic encounter with an M16.
... back to realtime, I saw a great documentary on the actions of an insane special ops commander that needlessly lost men due to his overzealous conduct during Grenada. The guy was such an asshole yet the documentary makers tried to paint him in the best light possible, like some sort of action hero's action hero. And then I was watching another doc on Panama and the guy was there again! This time authorizing yet another illfated mission. Being a pro war doc, it still kept trying to paint a smily face on this guy's career, despite the fact that after this latest bungled expedition he was forced out of the military. What's this world coming to when guys that get troops killed for no other reason than to make a flashy entrance at parties get thrown out of the service? oh yeah... a sane one. ------------------holmes

Let's see how fetching Rrhain's leer is when he's got his foot in his mouth. I guess only the rest of us love men in uniform. C'est la vie!

quote: How can I even get a bite in when you've taken them all for yourself? You know, when they said that they'd be serving "shrimp," that wasn't what they had in mind....
quote: Right...those who dare to question the actions of certain members of the military actually hate the military rather than the bozos who manage to make a mockery of the service. Think carefully, MrH...perhaps your argument, while sarcastic in your head, is actually carried by many people. And thus, perhaps I am responding to them rather than you.... ------------------Rrhain WWJD? JWRTFM!

Rrhain,
My parody of a macho shell-shocked ultrapatriot is nowhere near as convincing as your parody of an overbearing humorless PC jerk. You must be a hell of an actor. ------------------I would not let the chickens cross the antidote road because I was already hospitlized for trying to say this!-Brad McFall

Oh, I get it, MrHambre:
When you get fooled, it's because the other person is a jerk. But if somebody takes your foolish comments seriously, it's because the other person is a fool. What a wonderfully protective ego you have. Hmmm...sexist and "PC" all at the same time. How ever do I manage it? ------------------Rrhain WWJD? JWRTFM!

I know, I know, first you were just acting like someone who didn't get the joke. Then you were just acting like someone who's got no sense of humor. Now you're acting like someone who doesn't know the jokes's over.
